Folder tours in Paris?

We plan to stop at Paris for a day or two and found these small wheel bike tours

http://www.paris-tours.net/?event=of...ate=08/31/2011

The bikes in the pictures look like Dahons.

Anybody has any experience with these tours? Any alternatives?

(carrying two folding bikes with us on the flights will be too much trouble).

Edit: the direct site seems to be here http://www.bikeabouttours.com/index.htm

There is Fat Tire bike tours, they operate in most major european cities, I have rented a bike from them in Berlin, seem like a decent organisation.

Thanks Diode. Do you know if they also have small wheel bikes?

Doesn't Paris have a cycle-hire program? It used to be pretty big coverage. Don't know what's happened recently, though. I would think that would be great for visitors.

No they have 26" ballon tyres cruisers, four speed hub gear, very nice bikes.

Velib. Then you will be cycling like a true Parisian. Everywhere, very cheap (1 euro per day if you keep all rides under 1/2 hour), no worry about finding them, no worry about theft or locking them up. Paris is a city for exploring, and walking is often the best way. With Velib, you can switch from one mode to another without having to retrace your steps.

I can also vouch for Fat Tire. I toured with them in Berlin and they're a top notch outfit. Great informative guides.

We took the Paris Bike About tour last week. We joined a group of about 10 people and the tour lasted 4 hours, including a short break in the Latin Quarter.

The bikes were Dahon Vitesse (the derailleur version, not IGH). We went though bike trails as well as roads. Traffic was busy and the Paris drivers are very aggressive with very little patient for bikes (at least compares to the norms around here) but felt safe overall. Bikes where relatively new and reasonably functional though were far from tip top shape.

Our guide, which is also the proprietor was knowledgeable, friendly and spoke good English (a New Zealander). He came with his own bike, a Mu Su, and at one point offered me to swap bikes so I did the rest of the tour on his bike. The Mu Su we stiffer and lighter and I liked the single lever trigger snifter.

When we stopped at the Latin Quarter we had a chat about folding bikes and he said that he has difficulties with bike availability and prices (all his bikes are Dahon Vittese) and that he considered Bromptons but they are too expensive. He prefers small wheel bikes because of the wide range of seat height though they never fold the bikes.

Overall it was a lot of fun. In case you visit Paris and want to tour it with small wheel folders their web site is http://www.bikeabouttours.com

Velib is the way to go in Paris. Amazing system. Not w/o some flaws .. but if you are there one day you MUST try it.
NOTE: only American credit card I could use (last year) was American Express. Or any Euro card with the chip..
Just pick a station with a lot of bikes to choose 30 % of the bikes have some small flaws an 15 % dont work at all so you must pick a good one.
By a Velib map to see where all the stations are. There are many. It is a great system. Forget about small wheels for now and try it.
