Dahon Mu SL 2007 takes special rear cassette?
This is really wierd that I got a call from my bike mechanic saying that the American Classic rear hub on my Mu SL is not a Shimano compatible hub and will not take a standard Shimano 9 speed cassette. They tried fitting Shimano, SRAM and SunRace cassettes but the splines don't match in any combination. Is this unique to the 2007 Dahon Mu SL model and how do I get the new cassette to fit?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I'd encourage them to try harder.. I've used SRAM/Shimano cassettes on the Kinetix Pro wheels for years (and the Rolfs before that) .. typically, the A/C RD-205 hub was used with a lightweight JuJu (Shimano compatible) 11/32 8 speed on the Mu SL...

They first tried the SRAM PG-950 11-34 9 speed and then the PG 970. Both splines will not fit the A/C hub. Are these cassettes ok on the Kinetic PRO wheels?
Thanks!

AmCl freehubs are aluminium; so they can and are often deformed a bit and then it takes a bit of pursuasion to get the new one on. Or a bit of gentle filing.

I've mostly used SRAM 9 speed cassettes .... those should work fine... there is the off chance that you have a Campagnolo splined body, but those are completely different and should be obvious to a bike mechanic.. so should burrs on the existing body.. as Jur pointed out, the possibility of wear should be factored in.. did your worn out cassette slide onto a different Shimano donor hub in the shop?

It turned out to be wear on the spline and after proper preparations, the cassette went in no problem. My question to you experts is will the spline wear more with the new cassette as I ride hard with it and eventually ruin the splines? I am a bit worried about this as I do ride hard with big gears.
Thanks again Jur and Bruce for your priceless tips!

You can send a check directly to Jur... I'm sure he'll kickback a small fee to me since we're cross continental buds ...

If you use a higher end cassette, the bigger cogs are mounted on an aluminium spider which can't damage the splines. Since the bigger cogs exert the largest torque, they are also the best ones to be on a spider.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.. if you shear the splines, then it's time for a new hub body .. I'd imagine the new 9 speed cassette will have the sprockets working on newer metal as the spacing is different than the 8 speed that came stock..

That's what the mechanic did. Excellent to know that I paid extras for durability! Thanks again Jur for all your help!
