Well I finally took the plunge and shelled out some $$$ for a set of Ergon GC2-L grips. These are to replace my foamy Biologic grips.

I've read how some people simply loathe bar-ends. But for my 30-mile (both ways) commute, they should be a life saver as I encounter everything from gnarly downhills to steep uphills on the way back.

The GC2s allow to mount a bar end mirror like the Mirrycle Mountain Bike Mirror that I adore so much. Although positioning may have to be pointed downwards to allow proper grip of the bar end.

I've also read people mention these can get caught up on branches and stuff. There are a few parts of my commute which have tree branches sticking out so i should watch out for those. If anything I am hoping that they'll protect my fingers in case of a door or something.

I have Ergons on my Dahon Curve SL and they're awesome. Which is what prompted me to purchase the GC2 in Large. Feels a lot more solid. My hands are not the biggest but they are kind of wide with short fingers. I also trimmed about an inch off the grips to accommodate my preferred short handlebar.

The bar ends are positioned slightly downwards and do not interfere with the brake levers and go just fine with the trigger shifters. They'll be tested on the field tomorrow during my commute.

Don't worry too much about the barends hooking behind stuff - I think that is a mountain biking fear where you are careening through trees. (Although IMHO if your bars hit a tree or something that would have hooked a barend, you are going to come off anyway.)

a GC3-L, grip shifter set went on my Brompton M3L, longer bar end
hooks around front, has no hole to stick a mirror in the end..

I like the open palm grip, for comfort.

Noted, on older ones, the grey patch wears out first.. tempted to glue and wrap
Chamois leather on to make the rubber a better surface..

any advantage/disadvantage compare to regular ergon grips ?

any reason why it is positioned downward ? isn't this contradictory to it's main purpose of having grips when going uphill ? i have this ergon grips that i took out of my speed TR and if there's some advantages to this grips then i will put them back on. thanks.,

Having just tried them for the first time, i was experimenting with them. You mention you took the grips out of your Speed TR. What grips do you use now? The advantage for me is great over the old foamy Biologic ones my bike came with. These actually stay in place since a nut tightens them. Still haven't tried the bar ends in action -- going uphill -- but tomorrow will change that.


The only advantage I'd say would be that these grips GC2s come with the bar ends already. Thus not having to purchase them separately. They are exactly the same grip as the GC1s with the exception of the bar ends. On the GC1s -- regular grips -- you can choose the bar end. Both versions accept tube mounted mirrors.

i bought an Ergon GP1 and i like it a lot but thinking on putting the Ergon GC2 back. it sounds like it will be a better choice. let me know how it's handling.

GC3 integrate the bar end in, 1 bolt clamps both
but each have some adjustment potential range,
and bar ends are a composite with rubber patches
for hand slip reduction
end is closed though , so mirror end plug not compatible.

Lunch time!

So it only took about an hour to get to work. I've only ridden back home this is the first time on the way. Nice when there is nobody on the roads.

I adjusted the bar ends slightly upward and do offer additional hand positions. Which is great. A little numbness on the right hand but some adjustment may solve that.
