cable splitters and bromptons
Every so often I get a flat or have some other need to pull my Brompton's wheels and since I have Brompton brakes this means deflating the tire or loosening the brake cable at the brake end. I noted in reading about Moultons and Rinko headsets that chain splitters are used that allow for disconnecting brake cables without tools, effectively splitting it into two parts. Some made by Da Vinci are around 40 each while Ritchey has some around 13 on Amazon. Has anyone tried these on a Brompton? I would love some QR brakes as my regular top pull side pull brakes all have, but I don't know of any that would work on the Brompton. If there is something that has a QR that would be good to know, also.

Moulton bikes use cable splitters on the separable TSRs...but usually they are only used on a part of the bike that only has the inner cable showing..ie along a toptube or downtube..The bikes that split in two pieces also use them..ie S & S coupled bikes..
Do not know where you could use them on a Brompton ..
Is it so much trouble to deflate the tyre..Deflated anyway when you have a puncture!

Why not use a brake lever with a barrel adjuster? Adjust when you need the extra width to take out your wheel/tire. If for some reason, that's not enough, you can always put a second barrel adjust mid-cable somewhere.

You might find the extra linkage makes for more friction. I would avoid it if you can on the long cables on a fold underneath folder like a Brommie.
Or fit levers with a qr?

If you're having that many flats, you might want to bite the bullet and run Marathons,at least on the rear. +1 for running levers with releases. Or just set your brakes so that you have at least 4 turns or so out on the barrel adjusters so you can get slack. Adding a breakaway in the cable will prolly turn into a PITA when it comes time to reconnect it.
Having said this,I concur that it's time for Brompton to redesign their caliper with a release. Can't understand why they didn't do it in the first place.

+1 on the Marathon Plus & Schwalbe AV 4 or 5 tubes .
I replaced my levers with some Cane Ck cantilever MTB ones I had.
but needed a Longer cable & housing on the front bcause the cable doesnt come out pointing down like the original Lever ..
maybe just put an inline adjuster in the housing Run?

Those are good ideas, and frankly I've never heard of an inline cable adjuster, which is pretty much like a cable splitter in terms of screwing in and out. I would sure prefer some brakes with a QR built in like most single pulls are today but this will work. Even deflated it would be nice to have a little extra room. The inline adjustors seem a lot like what used to come out of brakes or center pull cradles. The QR brake thing and a chain tensioner mounted to the dropout so the wheel could be removed without taking the tensioner off are two things Brompton could do that I would really like and would make an excellent product a little better. Wouldn't mind a face plate holding on the handlebars either. Thanks for your responses.

You could also look up the "split tubeless" process and never worry about flats again unless you actually tear the sidewall.

Bike Friday Tikit may be More your pick .. normal components in the menu.
you have to take Bromptons Chain Tensioner off,
because it Covers the Nut that Holds the axle on the frame on that side .. 2 nuts on the same side.

You and me both. For the life of me I can't understand why they went with that tensioner design.

Ah,no,you can still get flats with tubeless tires. Tubeless works well with thorns and goat heads, but glass shards will defeat it. And then it's almost impossible to repair at the side of the road. I would never run a tubeless setup around DC,unless it was a strictly snow bike.

I am probably going to get some Stan's or Orange Seal to put in my tubes and still be able to fix a flat on the road. Goatheads are such an issue in the SW and I have heard Stan's defeats them. Now, what kind of QR levers or brakes will work on the brompton? The inline thing is certainly an easy cheap fix, though.
