New Bike Friday NWT inbound

Sorry I was gonna wait until I actually had the bike to post anything, but I'm too excited. Just spoke to the rep at BF and my bike should be shipping today!

I ordered a NWT, British racing green front end, with a black rear triangle, drop bars and a back rack with the under rack bag. I contributed some components to the build to help keep my costs down, so I have a 2x9 drive train with bar ends. That is sufficient for anything I have planned for the next year or so. If I decide I need to climb the Rockies I'll look to upgrade the drive train.

I'll be touring for 2 weeks to a month in July on this bike but the day to day use is as my major form of transportation, with this in mind I an pairing it with the Burly Travoy trailer. I may do some short weekenders with the trailer too but mostly it will be my run around town trailer.

Fenders are going to be hand hammered and black chrome done for me by a local metal artist. Tape will eventually hand wrapped cord in a spiral pattern done by yours truly. Will look like this except in black.

I have no idea if that will work out but I am going to try it.

I haven't decided on a front rack yet, still looking for something I like.

Whoohoo! Did the company call you, or did you break down and pick up the phone yourself? When did you place your order? I ordered my Llama on 27 Dec with an estimated date (don`t know if that was completion, ship, or receive date) of 10 Feb, and now I`m chomping at the bit.

> I contributed some components to the build to help keep my costs down, so I have a 2x9 drive train with bar ends.<
Really? I didn`t know you could do that. I though about having mine shipped as a partial bike to use some of my parts stash, but didn`t even ask in the end. Did you ship your parts to Eugene, or or they shipping the bike without certain components?

>Fenders are going to be hand hammered and black chrome done for me by a local metal artist.<
Sounds great, I bet they`ll look nice!

OOoooh- cool! You might get hit up for a How-To now.

I like the idea of those under the rack bags. For mine though, I think I`m going to build a platform just a couple inches over the rear tire and use it with a gym bag rather than panniers. All things considered, I think the COG will work out about the same as standard height panniers, but I`m counting on the easy packing of the big articles in the rear with front panniers for quick access stuff.

I broke down and called Walter at BF, it was scheduled to ship on the 3rd but they said that could be delayed so I called to confirm.

As for the parts, I asked about doing that since I had some stuff laying around and they agreed, there was a surcharge but I still saved a bit. Parts were shipped to Eugene well in advance of my build date.

I'm really looking forward to the new ride, but I plan on selling my Surly LHT and rode about 30 miles yesterday on it. It made me sad, I really like that bike and am now having second thoughts about selling it.

Only saw that line wrap on the handrails of sailing ships in museums,
they had lots of time, underway, under sail..

I'd hate to have that under my hands all the time.. think common stuff
padded tape?
Ergon GC3 grips on their 3 pc straight bar.. is nice ..
biocork version would go well with your colour scheme.

their front rack , it comes off to fold flat, is fine..
I'm using It to fit Ortlieb's Sport Packers.

Do you have room for both? My stable is shrinking too, but it really needed to. I gave away my mountain bike over the summer, last week I sold a Bridgestone RB-T that had been serving as my road bike, next on the block will be a recumbent that I bought for my wife to try, but she didn`t like it.

Did you come up with that wraping method yourself? Does it have a layer of friction tape or something underneath, or just wrapped directly on the aluminum?

I have room for both bikes, but I do need to thin the herd, currently at 4 bikes and I live in an apartment.

The wrapping is something I learned in the Navy, I'll probably do a thin tape wrap under it. I know it will look nice but it may turn out to be uncomfortable, if it is I'll go back to a regular wrap

This is one of those things that if I saw it on a bike, I would completely understand, particularly when you say you are a sailor (please notice I didn't use the term "Squid"). Just the skill involved in doing that, gives it merit in my opinion. I say totally worth a try.

Mr Jim
Congratulations on your new bike! My New World Tourist arrived last Friday ( Bike Friday, Ordered on a Friday. Arrived on a Friday. Coincidence or what?) Black with red trim.

I have only done short ride on it but they have built it for my body. When you sit on the bike your hands fall right where the bars are (H-bars). I put a Brooks’s saddle on it and even though it is not broken in yet, it still feels right. The frame feels firm and direct. I am in love with it.

^^Groovin!
What did you order and when? Did they just send an email for the heck of it or did you contact them to ask about it? Mine isn`t late yet, and I distingctly remember telling the sales rep that there was no hurry, but I find myself sitting on my hands lately to keep from bugging them.

Roadie, what model did you get?

Same as Jim (NWT) and I don't remember the exact date I placed the order. I was working with Walter for quite a while before I pulled the trigger. I received a call from someone building it regarding some of the cable brazeons and he said it would be done last Sat or today. Just have to wait for shipping now.

Hey do any of you guys have plans to take you Friday on a plane?

This was one of the reasons I bought the bike. I want to start touring in other countries. Probably even yours sometime.

I have to, at least once. That was my excuse for playing with a new to me format
In the mean time, I`m hoping the Friday will fill in for the road bike that I just got rid of. Roadie, are you waiting for a NWT?

I'm looking to get it on Amtrak in the travel bag for trips, my local station won't load a bike in a case.

Since it seems several of us have new BF's inbound we should do a Bike Friday Coming Out Party thread once they arrive. First guy to receive his can open the thread LOL

Congrats to all you new Bike Friday owners!

As per taking the bike on the plane, we've done it several times in the two years we've had our bikes with no problems.

Usually applies only to the Submarine forces, .. USN(SS)(N)..now all Nukes.
[Been there, done that, got the dosimeter and film badge records to show for it.]

Hmm not true, sailors are squids, submariners are usually known as "bubbleheads"

Fridays on planes: piece of cake. You just have to watch the weight a little -- Friday, plus bike shoes, plus other odds and ends comes up dangerously close to an airline's 50-pound limit. And there is something very satisfying about sitting in a hotel room and putting a bike back together again.

Especially when you know the hotel people have no clue you have a bike up in the room. Heh heh...

My sales rep says t looks like it`ll ship "later this week or early next week", so pretty much according to schedule. Says they`ll send a tracking number when it goes.
Sigh... Okay.
