input on single speed folders

I have an old Dahon single speed folder w/fenders & rack. I love this bike and its been all over the world with me, literally. However the folding mechanism is wearing out and it is beginning to look like it has been all over the world.

I'm probably going to keep it for the grand kids (they love it; I'll probably weld it), however, I want to get a newer one for my trunk; a single speed. I LOVE the simplicity of a single speed. After spending 2 years with no other transport but a bicycle a few years back; I have learned to appreciate the simplicity of a single speed bike.

My question is this: which one??

I'd be lying if I said money is no object: it is.
I don't need the lightest bike out there. If me and my bike need to lose 3 lbs.; it is a lot cheaper for me to lose it than the bike.

I need some input on a single speed bike that is going to get used and folded and used and folded and used . . . you get the idea by now. . . .

The Dahon Mu Uno and it's steel counterpart are to rich for my blood.

20" alloy wheels & no cables please.

Thanks, Sim

Well, there is always the basic Dahon S1 - $299 from Thor USA - has only one cable (front brake), steel wheels though, but comes with rack & Fenders.

Other choice might be the Citizen Gotham for $289 - has two brake cables, but also has Alloy wheels and Fender & Rack kit is only $19.

What about a Speed Uno for $399? - no cables, but no rack or fenders, either.

My old 2005 Dahon S1 is still going strong in the hands of my 14 yr old grandson. It's his favorite bike, and he has four of them.

I generally recommend the Speed Uno over the current S1. The current Speed Uno has a 4130 chromoly frame. Your 2005 S1 has a 4130 chromoly frame. The current S1 is high tensile steel.

Thor is right, the Speed Uno looks amazing. I got to see pictures of mine last night. Even my mother commented on how nice it looks!

What is your budget for a new folder?

I wish USAsians wouldn't assume everyone else is in the US. I just spent five minute finding out if the B'fold was available in Sweden.

If you live in a town somewhere in the depths of USA that shares the name with a world capital, it would be helpful to include USA in your location, rather than expecting everyone else to know the 2 letter abbreviations for all 50 states.

Does this complaint emanate from London, UK or London, Ontario? :)

Not wanting to derail this thread any further (sorry OP), I've found a more suitable place to respond http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...3#post13839243
