RHINE: birdy copy with 20" wheels

Rhine seems to be a Birdy with 20" wheels.

This is available in the philippines from this website: http://peerlessbike.blogspot.com/201...lfway-p18.html

I am not connected to them in anyway, I just thought it was an interesting foldie.

Nice!
Not bad for <$800.

Note:
I used this site http://coinmill.com/PHP_calculator.html#PHP=29,800 for denomination conversion. ' not sure if it's current.

I liked how they made some trolley wheels so you can push it around like the bromptons. I don't think the real birdys even have that trolley wheel. This version seems much more user friendly for multi mode commuting.

did a mockup of the folded rhine vs folded birdy based on wheelsize, seems that the 20" wheels make a bit of a difference as one would expect. At arond 630usd for the "low-end" and 730 for the higher spec, it's looking good.

Funny thing is I like the look of the rhine better, its more in line with the titanium version of the birdy and has that rough industrial look. really nice!

A full suspension 20" folding bike with a brompton style trolley rack? what more can I ask for? Actually I would be nice to have a distributor in North america!

It looks to be a dead ringer of the Classic framed 20" Birdy, which they marketed for just a short while. Funny that the only reference I can find is from the outfit in the Philippines, maybe they snapped up Pacific's inventory and had them rebadged. Seems it would be less costly then trying to clone them in their entirety as the components look original. Even the name seems a nod at R&M.

R&M does offer a wheel kit for their Expedition rack, but this one looks more like the wheeled racks sold in Japan. First time i've seen the wheeled fender, very Bromptonish.

Would be interesting to see one in the flesh. At the given price it would be a deal if a rebadged Birdy, which is marketed as the BD-1 and Bianchi Fretta in Japan. I have seen their 14" wheel sets and other accessories on ebay, so maybe they'll toss these on as well.

Unfortunately there are no distributors for Birdy left in the Western Hemisphere, and the few dealers listed in the US don't really stock much.

I have a brand new silver Rhine that just arrived today! I had a chance to examine it, and take a short ride. The quality and the fold are impressive. I don't plan to keep it, so if anyone is interested, let me know.

Hi, can you please give us an unbiased review? Have you taken it as a daily commute ride? How is it off-road?

Thanks! (I am interested)

I have not spend enough time with you to give a full unbiased review. But, the construction quality is excellent! The components are top notch, the bike itself is beautiful.

I'm heading out to vacation tomorrow but I'll be able to spend some time with it when I get back next week

I've been watching those listings. It's interesting that in those listings, the seller asks you to email them if you're interested in buying the bike. Odd for an auction listing!

Could you elaborate on why Pinigis is recommending caution regarding the auctions? Did Paul contact the seller?

I actually tried emailing the seller and got no replies to my questions, other than an increase in price from $433 (price of the bike in my ebay cart) to the $499 that it was before the listing was removed.. Imagine money out but no bike in return .. if you want specifics, I'd contact Paul directly..

I made a purchase and never got the bikes. I ended up having to file a report with the FBI internet fraud group. They did nothing.

This is why I reported it as an "offer to sell outside of eBay". There's also a shady listing for a mini-velo that's similar.

Wow, that is shady business for sure!

Yikes! That's no good.

So, was the silver Rhine bike you got your hands on purchased from the same seller that you had to file the fraud report on? (If you'd rather not reply to that question it's fine with me... I'm just curious.)

Yeah I saw that mini-velo auction too.

I'm not sure if anyone else noticed that they have posted up the Rhine auction several times under different Ebay seller names. I browse Ebay almost daily and (among other keywords) I always do searched on the keywords "Birdy folding bike" and I've stumbled across these Rhine auctions more than once. Each time the description is the same.

.
No, I had a friend in Shanghai purchase it directly from the factory and FedEx it to me. I did not want to take any chances. It is a very well-made bike with good quality compoenets. I am very impressed with the ride, I just don't need the bike. I couldn't resist the opportunity to try one out.

I see these things advertised as "Rhine Birdy". Of course the basic R&M design is over twenty years old, but since Rhine is using the Birdy name I hope Herr Riese and Herr Muller are getting some royalty or license moneys for the use of their reputation and branding.

You can find that on taobao easily, "上海鸟 Shanghai bird" or "RHINE" as the keyword. ϺB_Ա.

But for that effort and cost, you might as well buy a 2nd hand Birdy from Taiwan market. In addition to the copyright issue, there's always build quality concern floating around.
