    Comet or Durano?

    In my research I am debating between these two 451 sized tires. Wondering if anyone has experience with both of these tires. They seem similar but I am getting conflicting advice from Schwalbe and BF as to which is more durable.

    I am a 210 pound rider, like to go fast BUT the roads I am riding on my BF PR are 80% asphalt with the rest being cobblestone, crushed stone and some offroad. Obviously durability and puncture protection are paramount and speed is 2ndary. Understand the Durano's are very hard to mount which is certainly a red flag for me.

    Also contemplating going to a 1 3/8ths rear tire as per another member's suggestion and keeping the front at 1 1/8th.

    Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

    Folding bead tires let you bring extras , should the casing fail.

    thirds roll down is a common way to carry wire bead tires..

    [it's also the way that band saw blade loops are shipped and stored]

    Thanks Bob. Got a nice sized seat pack that can fit a wire bead tire just in case, but you make a good point nonetheless.

    If you're going to mis-match tire sizes, I'd stick with the Comets.. I've run both Comet sizes through the years on 451 wheels and they have been consistently good.. the herringbone tread works well enough on dirt roads and they roll pretty well on pavement.. as a heavy rider, I'd probably run the 1 3/8 both front and rear and enjoy a slightly more comfortable ride.. I also have a set of Duranos on 451 rims and they are also good, but I never noticed any speed difference between the two..

    Are the 451 Comets undersized for their specified ERTO? (too narrow)

    Based on a few conversations at the BF YAK, it seems that later Primo Comets are much truer to the specifications as opposed to earlier production which was always very narrow relative to specs. Although all of my experience was with ERTO 406.

    BTW, I have Primo Comets on the Bike Friday as well as the trailer with the kids in it.

    I've used both in 406 ... although in very different widths. Primo Comets are more durable IME.

    Personally, I think that the trade off in weight is more than worth the extra volume of the wider Primo Comet. In a lot of situations, I would not be surprised to hear that the 1 3/8" model was faster ... especially if you're going over something like cobblestones.

    I have used both. I currently use Duranos on my Swift, for road rides. I don't hesitate to take gravel trails when I need to. I have worn out a few of these, so now I run a Durano on the back and a panaracer minits lite on the front. Both have Slime or similar tyre liners for bullet-proof puncture protection.

    I think the duranos are a bit faster but these things are very very subjective. Real controlled tests would show the difference to be far smaller than other factors on the bike.

    Comets are very robust. I haven't worn out one yet. I suppose they have harder compound which means less grip while cornering. Comets have really become my tyre of choice - very durable, fast and cheap enough. Every bike will eventually have them in my stable. Just wearing out all the existing ones.

    Hi Jur, thanks for your response to my query about the tires. Sounds to me like you have a lot of experience with both tires. What do you think of me putting a 1 3/8ths on the back and a 1 1/8 on the front? Do the liners negate the logic of running a 1 13/8ths? Not sure about an 85 psi tire on the rear but I'm sure it will help smoothen the cobbles and rougher roads.

    What size tires are you running on your bike?

    Can I also ask what the shelf life of the slime liners you are putting in are and what brand you are using. Never have run a liner before...I run tubeless on my road bike, tubular on my TT bike and clinchers on my mtn bike. Never tried a liner before...amazing the different permutations and combinations that wheels can have!

    Thanks again for your insight...sounds like you like the Comets and that is what I was leaning towards as well.

    Years ago I started using Kevlar-belted tyres (Comet, Big Apples plus maybe some others) and I found the Kevlar belt a gimmick. I did not get the sense that my punctures were reduced at all. It is hard to be objective when you only get a "few per year", but with Kevlar I also got a "few per year". Pieces of glass, generally. So I started trying out liners (Slime at first, now also Zefal).

    There is no shelf life - it isn't the slime, it is a polyurethane strip. With the liners I essentially stopped having punctures, except for a few where the liner itself rubbed through the tube. I learned from that that the cut ends of the liner needs to be feathered with sandpaper to prevent rubbing through.

    So these days I try to get tyres without Kevlar as the Kevlar just costs money. All my current Primos are with Kevlar, just because other ones weren't in stock at the time I needed to buy. I use Duranos also with a Zefal liner.

    Just a caution - a buddy also tried a liner once on my recommendation; he got a Mr Tuffy (I think) with a black stripe down the middle. That liner was much harder and it ended up ruining the tyre. Slime liners and the Zefal liners are generally quite thin, perhaps 1mm in the middle, so they are light enough and supple enough that I can't at all detect any difference. Maybe an expert could by riding tyres with and without back-to-back.

    They might slow you down a tiny bit; but punctures slow you down a lot more.

    edit: Here's a pic of a Big Apple after commuting numerous times through broken bottles. Look mum, no punctures! You can see the green liner in the huge gashes.

    Yikes that poor tire!!!

    Just put Comets (1.5") on my 9FS so we will see how it goes. I have been spoiled by Big Apples for a while now. Tried Duranos but the ride was super rough and SLOWER - bouncy = annoying = tiring = slower.

    I am actually using both sizes in tyres, but for the Primos, 1-3/8".
