Am I being a baby?
Hey Folders,
A little over 3 weeks ago, I received my brand new Tern Link D8 from a famous and well respected vendor on these forums. The bike arrived with clear signs that it had been dropped, and dropped hard while in the folded position. I have chunks of metal missing from the handlebar latch and the main handlebar post-hinge, with paint missing from all other contact points on that side.
I immediately sent an email with pictures merely asking for assurance that structurally my bike is still cool, as I am already pushing the max weight limit. I was not interested in returning it, or anything that would keep my bike off of the road unnecessarily.
Ive not gotten a response back, and it's nearly been a month.
Despite the small rain cloud on my new foldie party, the bike seems ok.
I'm not a good at complaining, if I find a hair in my burger, I pull it out and keep eating.
Would you guys just drop it (pun not intended) if this happened to you?

Basics: What did the shipping box look like upon delivery? Did it look like it had been dropped, or crushed by two tons of other cargo sitting on top of it during shipping?

Chances are that the damage was caused during delivery, but give the vendor another chance to make it right.

Was it perhaps dropped out of the box during shipping? The shipping co. would simply shove it back in the box, tape it up again and keep mum. Hard to see how your bike vendor would make such a big error and then keep quiet about it.

Sounds like the damage was due to delivery. I would be calling the vendor, the delivery company, etc. You paid for a new, undamaged bike - you should get a new, undamaged bike. Most likely the vendor will have to take it up with the courier, etc. Emails can get lost, so I would call, although I would have thought a month would have been more than enough time for a response.
Personally, I'd be a little concerned if there were "chunks of metal missing". If it was dropped that hard, there could be more damage than you can see, never mind misaligned parts, etc.

I think I'm over it, just wanted to bounce this off of a few other human beings I guess. I'm not looking to bad mouth or even warn anyone about any vendors, as I'm sure I'm just a rare case that fell thru the cracks.

Please keep on pestering them. They well deserve it, now you. The first place I would go to for a second opinion is a trustworthy local (to you) bike shop who will guide you in the full extent of what is exactly wrong with your bike. Plus what exactly what you could do to remedy the situation. I have some doubts about being able to return it as you already had it for a couple of weeks. The bike shop you bought it from could refuse to take it back or even fix it as it could be labeled a "used" bike now.

Bother them to death. Don't let this go. Months down the road, you will regret it.
and this is not a hair, but more like a spit in the burger or fender bender.

Contact the vendor! I would be PISSED in your postion. Would you pay for a new car that already came with scratches? When I pay for a new product, I am paying full price so that it will be intact.

I was too excited to start commuting full time by bike to wait another 1-2 weeks with the whole return process. Also, if for some reason they tried to deny anything or have me pay for return shipping, it'd sour me on the whole deal worse than what is probably just cosmetic damage.
And i didnt call, because calling to say I think you dropped my bike sounded pretty stupid in my mind I guess.

chunks of metal falling off ? thats serious problem i would not want that on a BRAND new bike
no response after a MONTH ??? give them a call !
if you try to sell that no one would probably buy it with pieces or chunks missing like that plus its a tern/dahon they have poor resale value to begin with
my suggestion return it and get the real thing get a Brompton

if you got the bike from me..... that I clearly havent gotten any emails from you. The box has to be opened here, the bike taken out, fully assembled, checked allover, than repacked the same way or very similar to the state when the bike gets delivered to us. We do make mistakes, but big scratches ( unless under the frame protection, which we like to keep on the bike ) would jump into our face, clunks of stuff falling off sounds impossible not to recognize upon inspection.
I did and still somewhat do have problems with my provider for emails, they have installed a spam filter which unfortunately doesnt let just anybody get through, therefore I have a toll free number on every page, and an alterntive Hotmail addy as well...
Of course its possible that fed ex dropped the bike, this can usually be handled upon receipt or very shortly after, not weeks later.
We take a bike in question back, inspect it and sell it for a cool deal ( as long as it is only cosmetic obviously ) Usually claims with ups or fed ex however never get solved and I am stuck with the difference ... but if thats what it takes, so be it .

You're being a baby in that you should have called the vendor a long time ago. Why would you post in a public forum, airing your transaction issues without having first exhausted the easy route of contact via phone? Emails get lost, forgotten, etc. If the problems with your bike were serious enough to cause you consternation, you should have just picked up the phone. Sorry to sound harsh here, but you risk casting the vendor in a poor light without knowing all the facts of the matter first.

Thor, he can't be talking about you, he said "famous & well respected vendor" and you're just well respected.
To the OP, just call the vendor you bought it from. Emails get lost from time to time. If I remember correctly, Thor was also having email issues 2-3 weeks ago if it does happens to be him you bought it from.

When I received my Dahon (shipped from NY) it had scratches on the rack and part of top tube. I called the vendor, he said he can send me a new one at no cost to me or credit my credit card $50 which would be about his cost for shipping a new bike to me. I chose the $50 since the bike will get scratches eventually. But very happy on how the vendor handled the matter.

I get it that I should've called, and I probably will if only to just notify them of what happened without any presumptions of my own. I purposely never gave the name of the vendor, so I'm not sure how I could be casting anyone in a poor light. I have no interest in bad-mouthing anyone, warranted or not.

Yes, you're right about not naming the vendor, and sorry I jumped down your throat about that. Being new to the forums, I'm guessing you don't realize that there aren't a whole lot of super active vendors of folding bikes on here, so your description of the vendor seemed as good as naming them (at least to me).
