Hi Newbie,

If your expectations are lower you can find a sub $200 folder. However, it really does'nt pay. Let me tell why from my experience. In 2009 we purchased 2 Schwinn Tango's At $169 ea. Both seats had to be replaced for comfort and utility. The folding pedals broke and had to be replaced. We use them in Florida in the winter and corrosion is a constant issue.

They are for sale now and we hope to get $50 ea.

We have since purchased a Giant Expressway and Giant Halfway at $360 & $560 after discount at the LBS. It would have been easier to do that in the first place and enjoy owning the better bikes.

In the US, Camping World carrys an assortment of cheap folders but the same caveats apply.

See the used section :thumb:. Though I've never purchased a used bicycle I'm very willing to do so. A long time ago I was a professional guitarist. I was very snobbish about guitars until one day I came across a used acoustic with nylon strings. It sounded really good and played good too. It was one of the instruments that the music store rented to people. It was a cheap model but it was amazing. Somehow the magical guitar fairies got together and made this cheap guitar a great instrument. From then on I dropped my attitude that only expensive high end new guitars were worthwhile.

I'm not saying that I'll only buy used things but I now consider used things as a real possibility. Sometimes they are bargains.

By the way the music store wouldn't sell that guitar to me even when I offered nearly what it would cost new.

I bought my Dahon Curve almost unused at half price. Great bike, great value. May take some time searching but worth it!

I would first suggest looking for a good used folding bike of a reputable make. However if your neck of the woods is anything like mine, the chances of finding a used one will be slim to none and when one does show up, the seller expects a premium price for it.

I'm happy with my Citizen Miami. It's certainly not among the highest quality of folding bikes but it's more than capable, has serviceable components and will most likely be the one I do a 2 week solo tour through parts of Scotland on come spring 2013 ... because it's decent enough to handle the task.

How often and far do you intend to ride? What type of riding will you be doing?

If you can find an older used Raliegh 20 there is a lot that can be done with it.

What have you got to offer NEW for 200 or less?

If you're near a metro area you can find a good deal on Craigslist. It just takes time (calling people who sold their bike but never removed the ad, who mispresent the quality of the bike, and you find out it's junk.). This Verso Cologne looks interesting for $266. You can google for it and find it sold elsewhere with user reviews, etc. I even saw a short Youtube video of it folded.

It seems to sell for $330+ elsewhere.

If you could spend more time and get a Dahon Boardwalk (or something) on Craigslist you could probably get it for $150. But, it can take a long time and a lot of wasted trips looking at misrepresented stuff. If you could swing $266 at least you'd be on a bike. You could get started with folders. If you decide to "trade up" you could sell it.

I took the long route, and eventually picked up a broken Dahon Boardwalk (actually gray market Boardwalk from China) for free. Rehabed it, replaced the rear derailer and freewheel with a 7-speed internal gear hub. Great learning experience.

But, I've had good luck with above $150 Walmart bikes.

Maybe.. when the serial numbers are ground off..

bikebreak 08-17-12 11:56 AM

If you can save another $100 get a downtube nova. It's a great bike for the money, I think they are using the same frame as the dahons.

Actually, those are the entry level models. The best models are in the $1000-$2000 range.

No.

Folding bikes, because of the fold, require more complex frames and technology than equivalent non-folding bikes. This translates into more cost, both because of the additional components and engineering, and also because of economies of scale.

A folding bike typically costs at least $200 or more than an equivalent regular bike. So what you're really asking is: can I get a bike for essentially nothing? $200 regular bikes are dangerous things to ride. A $200 folding bike is a monstrosity.

If you have only $200 to spend, you should buy a non-folding bike.

There are bargains to be had if you search diligently for used bikes. If you've got the skills, you could geta project bike to fix up.

jefmcg 08-18-12 06:24 AM

If you were in Europe, I'd send you to Decathlon.

Particularly http://www.decathlon.co.uk/b-fold-20-id_8186827.html
Simple, single speed, a bit heavy, but it's a good brand and it will be a decent bike. And at current conversion, 202USD including 20% vat.

I guess there's no US equivalent.

keke 08-18-12 11:10 AM

^^
I agree jefmcg. I've seen the bike in the flesh and it feels very solid. Didn't testride that one, tried out the 7 speed version briefly in the store and it felt good.

Many bikes, let alone folders don't have suspension. They are mostly found in mountain bike. Its the tires/frame/saddle that makes for a comfy ride. any experienced cyclist would recommend bike that are light.
