Bent Brompton rear rim
I went for my first long(ish) ride on my new brompton this past weekend and towards the end I noticed the rear rim was bent and needed to be trued. I took it to the shop and they "straightened it as best as humanly possible" but it still isn't ideal, and there is a slight wobble. Should I push for a replacement? I have only ridden the bike about 30 miles total. Would this be covered under warranty?

but it still isn't ideal, and there is a slight wobble. Noted: there are people apparently with OCD posting here , they often seem to seek an unrealistic Ideal. slight wobble ? radial or lateral? , how many mm? .. If you hit something riding, and damaged the rim, it is not a material defect. it is accidental damage. you fix it.. , probably don't have to buy new spokes , though.. the rear ones are pretty thick. But generally Mass produced 'machine built' wheels benefit from some individual hand tensioning and truing , checked at the local level .. perhaps you just did that and are good to go for a while. |
The 'wobble' is lateral an I haven't measured but it's noticeable when riding. I'm confident that I didn't hit something to damage the rim, I've been riding for years and this has never happened with other bikes. I'm a very cautious and aware rider.

If the rim runs round , judging by the way it passes the brake pads ,
neither rising or falling in relationship to the pads. then the issue may be the Tire, or the mounting of it, or you feel the imbalance of a big relatively heavy spoke mounted reflector. probably just a conversation , on the topic, blind guesses are the best Offering.. from way out here.. you got a warrantee statement when you got the bike ? Perhaps the dealer will replace or rebuild the wheel IDK. |
A properly built 20" or smaller wheel ought to be near indestructible, particularly the 28 spoke variety. Absolutely make sure it's replaced under warranty.
