Ciclavia Returns This Fall Again (Just A Couple More Weeks)

"...........The next CicLAvia is less than a month away.......LA's biggest block party returns on Sunday, October 7 – one week after Carmageddon II and one week before the dramatic arrival of the space shuttle Endeavour. It’s a car-free trifecta for Los Angeles!........We’re particularly excited about this CicLAvia because we’ve developed a new route featuring some of our city's most amazing destinations. For the first time, we’re going to Exposition Park, Chinatown, Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights, and the newly completed Grand Park downtown, where CicLAvia will converge with the inaugural celebration of the park’s performance lawn........The upcoming CicLAvia also includes many longtime favorites, such as MacArthur Park, the ride to and through downtown along 7th and Spring Streets, Little Tokyo, and, of course, the 4th Street Bridge – with its million-dollar view of the downtown skyline. As always, CicLAvia will also offer a wide variety of activities for people of all interests and ages, including music, performances, food trucks galore, and just about everything else L.A. has to offer!......."-http://www.ciclavia.org/next-event/

So there you have it. I don't need to add anything else except if you are in the area (visiting or residing), do come!

    folder fanatic,

I will be flying from SF to LA for this event. I will bring as many family members (they are all auto-centric, so hopefully I can convince them that biking can be fun and use as a commuter) from LA to join this event. I already have 8 committed. This is super exciting. We have the same events up here in SF and it is called "Sunday Streets". It is great fun!

I am so glad that you and your family will be joining all of us here on this unique bike experience. I do suggest that you carry as much water or other liquids as you can with you when you ride. It can be quite hot even in October around here. I did get a bit overheated on the first Ciclavia that was held in October 2010 as that one was rather hot as I remembered it. I also recommend that you seek out shady spots and ride a bit slowly should it get a bit over 85 degrees fahrenheit or so. But don't let the warnings put you off at all. Please have a wonderful visit here as you will see Los Angeles the way it's supposed to be-on bicycles.

No longer in SoCA area, but will be participating in Portland, OR's last Sunday Parkways for 2012 - five total this year - in East Portland for the first time.

They are getting something like 10,000+ participants out for each of these 7-9 mile rides.

Sounds like the L.A. ride will be going through some interesting areas - especially for those folks living in the 'burbs.

Have fun - we will be in Portland on our Fridays. (Have been seeing more folders on each successive ride - predominately Bromptons, Dahons & Fridays.

Thanks for the tips FF. Yeah I am not accustom to riding above 80 degrees. I hope the weather gets cooler on that day. I lived in LA for over 20 years but have never ridden a bike through it. It's a shame but I will have a chance to do it now. I am planning to visit Long Beach too. I hear it's improving to be more bike-friendly.

Long Beach is supposed to be more bike friendly, but I have not visited it in ages so I could not honestly tell you about that. If you like to meet up with other like minded small wheel fans (like I am & you don't have to join or live around here), do meet up with the Small Wheel Group Of Los Angeles at the Ciclavia. See their Facebook page for more information: http://www.facebook.com/groups/276203045735245/

I am just curious how are you and your family members going to transport your bikes to LA and back?

Participated in the last of five of Portland Sunday Parkways rides for 2012 - this time in East Portland for the first time.

Only seven miles long (they are normally 7-9 miles), but in an area we have never really explored that much. Saw 2-3 Dahons, 4-5 Bromptons and maybe 6 Fridays - one was a tikit, I think. FYI, Bike Friday was there with their usual Canopy and display, but minus any tikits - see current tread regarding recent stem riser cracks & breakage.

Folder Fanatic - saw your 9-22 post - actually, we are back in our 'old' area in the NW - where we were before we went down to Ventura for our 2 1/2 yr re-modeling and selling the condo stint.

Have fun on the L.A. ride guys!

Some Good Bicycle Groups To Check Out (read full article for more information):

    ".......Bikerowave

The group: This all-ages crowd consists of mechanics from the Bikerowave co-op shop (and surrounding shops), plus a handful of Westsiders. The riders are mostly beginner to intermediate.

    Flying Pigeon Los Angeles

The group: More than 200 participants turn out for this ride—from riders in costume; to families with kids and trailers in tow; to those for whom their bikes are their babies.

Watts Labor Community Action Committee + East Side Riders

The group: Friends of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (proudly boasting ages 5-65) meet up with a local bike club, East Side Riders, for a large, multi-generational family-friendly ride. Expect to ride with at least 45 or so Watts regulars, many sporting customized cruisers.

    Caltech Bike Lab

The group: The Bike Lab, an offshoot of Caltech's cycling club, organizes this ride comprised mostly of students—with community members of all ages sprinkled in.

    Midnight Ridazz

The group: What started nine years ago as a small group of friends going on a nightly bike ride has grown into a wide collective of bike enthusiasts who now converge on the Midnight Ridazz online forum. Check out groups like Los Angelopes, known for their quirky, wild-looking bikes. If you're seeking out a party ride, hit up The Beastsiders from the Eastside and Crank Mob from the Westside......."
