Wait... I gotta make the thread? I just thought somebody would make that thread sticky...

Long-story-short: small wheels don't slow you down (very much). Not being geared high enough, that will definitely effect your speed.

I ride a Dahon Mu Uno, UK spec. I found that I'm faster on that than I ever could be on my road converted mountain bike on my weekly 30 miler. the dahon has single speed, originally came with 52x18, but i swapped out for a 16 to tighten up and give a better mph mileage. i find that its all in the rider at the end of the day. on paper, a single speed fold away with 20" wheels should be slower than a roadified mountain bike, but its not. its faster. and more fun.

I noticed the OP said are 'THE Dahons' slower?

Sounds like Snafu21 is building an army of folding bikes to invade the Earth for the next Dr Who series!

'The Daleks' replaced by 'The Dahons' Instead of Exterminate the new command will be 'Extirpate' and the fiendish plot will be to force all humanity to give up cars and non-folding contraptions!

That is strange, I have the exact opposite experience with my Dahon Mu SL (faster than your Uno I would think) and my big appled 29er MTB. Maybe the wind blows harder here so the penalty for sitting upright is higher? Or the rubbish pavement makes the big wheeler better.

Damn, 18mph average on the flats? I'd get all sweaty. I seem to do 15mph on a 10 mile commute now, trying not to break a sweat.

My 30 miler covers mainly flatland, and the pavements here are pretty good tbh. could be a number of things
