So much for that Dahon Ciao ...
It has been an interesting month. After my "new" '09 Ciao arrived I took it to a local bike shop for a tune-up, pointing out to the mechanic that there seemed to be a problem with the gear shifter (as in it wouldn't stay in any gear but 5!) Turns out the shifter was broken and needed to be replaced AND there were other problems with the hub/rear wheel. It was going to cost $250+ to get it fixed once the replacement parts arrived (and Dahon couldn't tell them when that would be). Since this bike was described as being "in excellent condition", I sent off an email to the seller describing the problems/cost of repairs and asking for a refund. I have to admit I was shocked when I received both an apology AND a refund within 10 minutes! Seller claims he didn't know there were problems. Whatever. I was happy to get the refund and move on.
SO ... after spending a week or ten days considering my options, I decided to buy a new Dahon Speed D7. Ordered it from Amazon (I love Amazon Prime!) more because I could get it in a day or two than to save a few bucks. (Driving down to Florida in the next week or two and wanted to take it with me.) We unpacked it yesterday and it is lovely! Online images don't come close to capturing the real finish, do they? (Color is "baltic", by the way.)
After reading the latest posts in the "Dahon/Bulgaria" thread describing the upgrades some of you perform on your bikes, I am embarrassed to say this (but will say it nonetheless): I am proud of myself for adding a ringer and a Sigma mileage computer (all by myself HA!)
It was supposed to be 64 today. Alas, they lied. It is 1 pm and only 46 degrees, the fog that set in last night is still here, and it has been raining off and on for hours. So no maiden voyage today. (Yeah, I'm one of those chicks who avoids cold and precipitation at all costs!) But I am enjoying just looking at my new toy.
Thanks for all the info you all have provided that has gotten me to this place. I'm sure I will have lots of questions once I get her down to Florida, where the Pinellas Trail is calling out to me.

All the nicest people ride Baltic Blue Dahons.
C'mon over to the Made in Bulgaria thread. We'll have you adjusting the blinker-fluid regulators within a week.

The Ciao was listed on eBay and Craigslist at the same time. The seller cancelled the eBay listing in order to sell it to me directly which eliminated the threat of "bad feedback" as leverage with the seller. However, I did pay him through PayPal and I was still within the period where I could file a claim for a refund due to the item not being as described. Luckily, I didn't have to go through that process.
I enjoyed looking at some of your videos this afternoon. Do you always travel with your folder? I have seen the Tobukaeru bikes listed on eBay. How do you like yours? The ones on eBay are 7 speed and I read that yours is 21. Did you upgrade it yourself? I so admire those of you who can do things like that. Maybe some day ...

1nterceptor: I know that I CAN ride the bike in crappy weather, I just don't want to. I hate being cold and wet. UGH!!!

when I travel. But so far I have only taken my folder on one trip, China. Sometimes I know
in advance that I'll be able to borrow a bike at my destination; Holland, California. Sometimes
I just plan to buy a cheap bike and leave it there, Philippines. And this was also what I planned
in Georgia, but I couldn't find any good deals and just rented. Some places have bike share
programs that tourists can take advantage of, Vienna.
I got my Tobukaeru folder a while ago, it came with 3 chain rings. The company stopped selling
these models. I can understand your disdain for riding in the rain, me I only do it because that's
how I get to work
