Oh the many folders I have loved

I have been doing this for a few years (Since 2007).... here is the list of the bikes that did not make the cut.
- Montague Paratrooper - 1 year -
- Bike Friday pocket rocket - 6 months,
- Dahon Vittesse 7 speed - 2 months
- Dahon speed 8 - 5 months
- Giant Expressway 2 - 6 months
- Citizen Miami - 1 month
- Dahon Silvertip 6 months
- Mezzo 10 -
- Brompton S6 - 1 year
- Swift - 4 months
- Bike Friday Tikit -2 months
- Dahon Espresso - Present bike

Some of these I had at the same time. I feel like a serial folding bike killer.

Like to see if anyone can top this list?

Can't say I have a revolving door policy... I tend to keep what I buy so I'd be one of the last with a list.

I agree. I am rather new to cycling and take great joy in customizing / modifying my bike to suite my needs as my cycling style matures.

My KHS Mocha didn't stay around long since the gearing was way too low. Sold that and bought by DaHon Curve 8, which I like a lot and will keep/ride for a long while, hopefully!

I am dying to hear why you got rid of many of those bikes.

Of Particular interest to my wife and I are the: Citizen Miami, Dahon Vitesse and Dahon Speed, Bike Friday(s) and the Brompton.

You have the unique experience amongst a lot of people on the forums of having owned about half of the folding bikes people post about, though I'm sure there are others (some who have already posted :wink who have owned a decent amount of bikes like that.

Actually, I did get a Dahon Boardwalk S1 off Craigslist as my first folder last July. Realizing that a single speed wasn't going to cut it for my type of riding, I moved on to the Origami by the end of September. My twelve year old daughter uses the Dahon, so now we both have foldies.

I'd like to hear the reasons for getting rid of some of these bikes. Was it just to finance the new purchase so you could see what you liked about another bike, flaws in the bikes, overpriced for your needs? There's some pretty nice bikes on that list.

Most of it had to do just no liking the ride or the fit. Sometimes it's the shine of something new or I changed my comutter habits and got tired of it sitting around.

We have a 3 rule bike in the house (that includes folders), I can sometimes get away with trying 2 at the same time. The Mezzo was for my son, but he did not warm up to it, so I tried it and thought the Brompton was better for me.
A lot of time I would customize the bike and sell it for the next thing, or I changed my biking habits due to injuries. I had a bad shoulder for a bit and taking the train and subway with a 4 mile ride was all I could do for about 2 years. So finding something that I could use on the train with killing my shoulder was a main concern. I eventually wound up with the Brompton, then thought the Tikit would be better..... live and learn. The shoulder is better and I have taken the train out of the multimodal equation and wanted something with more legs for more miles. The swift was nice.... but I really craved a larger wheel after riding 20's and 16' for a few years. I have not found any great faults with the ride of the espresso, changed out the seat and put a different bar with ergons on it.... it's ok.

But the lure of a Tern or an IF Mod is hard to resist. next time I go to Manhattan to see my buddy, I will probably go back and look at the Tern ..... If its a nice day, it might come home.

I did get a lot of use out of the paratrooper and the brompton. Probably about 3000 miles on the paratrooper and 1500 last year on the Brompton.

I stopped taking the train and just took the subway. The new train cars that Septa does not have a lot of room to sit and place folders, you have to stand most times with you bike. The older cars were better. Plus I had kept hitting my feet on those darn rollers with my heals. I tried modifying them... but I would still hit them no matter what roller combination I put on them. Now that I ride a bit further, I wanted a larger wheel... I found the Brompton tiring to ride on hills, even with the 6 speed. It's a great bike, just my needs changed.

My reason forgetting rid of folders is that they were not a better alternative to what I already, had or could upgrade to. My dual drive racing sytle mezzo is fast and folds quick and small. Only better fast riding bike I have owned is the upgraded downtube, but not as versitile due to larger fold.

Only bikes I regret selling are the downtube Ns9 with ulgertracranks and brifthers on bull bars, and the fast folding diblasi R4 which were sold when I did not have enough storage space to keep.

Sometimes I find a bike does not find a niche in my usage. Carryme didn't

I replaced my original FlyBy(8spd) with my Brompton to save weight and get an easier fold. Picked up a Mezzo D10 off eBay as an impulse buy. Didn't fold as nice as the Brommie,so I sold it. Now I regret it because they're not longer made(Ori's are much more expensive) and it rode so much better, had better gearing, and didn't need tools to remove the wheels. If I ever find another, the Brommie's gone.

I live around the corner from the downtube guys... wanted to see on in person, but they are seldom in the shop even if you make an appt.

I like it a lot. I still have it.

There's a used one for sale in CL, but it is $700 and a two hour drive.
I am tempted to make an offer, but I am afraid the seller might call my bluff.

I caught the bug from these forums a few years ago.

Current bike stable includes

Bike Friday Tikit
Dahon Speed TR
2-Raleigh Twenty(s) (1969 and 1972)

Previously I have owned

At least 3, 1980s Dahons
and a Boardwalk.

ALL of my bikes were bought second hand off CL
