Been thinking about a folder for awhile now and decided on a Origami Cricket 7 (yellow).


Got it yesterday and took it on its first 6 mile voyage this morning. I have a few things to tweak, tighten, and lube. I am definitely going to have to lengthen the front brake cable.
And, I have a mysterious widget to figure out. On the left hand brake there is a plastic thingymajiggy that I don't grok.



What is that thingy?

That thingy is the bell, but it seems that the "bell" part is missing. Look through the packaging materials to see if it was knocked out in shipping.

Oh, and, good looking bike!

I didn't even know the cricket came with a bell.

So, in other news. I rode the cricket all over my city streets and it handled them really well and rode comfortably. Even had a person stop and quiz me about it.

I'm really digging the new ride. And, even managed to travel with some course grading in the bags home from work.

I will need to check the right pedal in the morning as it did seem to grind a bit on the first day in action.

Overall first day impression, very positive... Just some normal kinks to work through.

The speling poliuce is onto you. PhDs are not allowed to use "road" when they mean "rode".

Don't even think about using "breaks" when you mean "brakes".

Spelling seems to be an issue in this thread; its Pinigis (all "i"s). And, yes, we are on top of the mystery of the missing bell (I called Shaggy and Scooby).

I can do triple integrals in four-vector coordinate space, build semi-autonomous robots, teach electrodynamics and quantum mechanics, bowl a 300 game, and bike in the middle of the street in the snow uphill during an earthquake.

Reason #12 to own a Cricket: - I can bike from my science building office door, down the hallways, into an elevator, down more hallways, into the classroom to teach. (And my students
think I am already weird enough.... that'll show'em). Did I mention the hi-viz yellow?

I'm right with you up until the bowl a 300 game (unless you aren't talking about standard bowling with 10 frames; if you are that's really impressive). I've taught electrodynamics in French (that was fun ).

I've tried sending messages with a 6 year old and a 3 1/2 year old using me as a jungle gym and, yes, my accuracy suffered as well. So I guess you can have a pass this time.

He's a physicist. They don't write English, they write math. I know, I was raised by two of 'em. It's a wonder I can speak at all (and they can't use a cell phone to save their life; my mother has phone numbers taped all over her phone. And I can tell a funny story about sitting at a table with several Nobel laureates all with cell phones, all looking perplexed).

I'm a physicist who spent years training physicists and I can speak (and sometimes spell words correctly in) English. So that's no excuse. (The kids climbing on him while he was using his phone and auto-correct, I'll buy that excuse... ). And most physicists I know have no problems using cell phones - rather they get them to do amazing (and scary) things.

Not much new to report yet. I'm buried in finals and grading. The Cricket folds well and comes with two velcro straps to hold it tight. Even has a nice notch to secure a helmet.

I got the Cricket 7 Combo (includes storage/travel bag, water cage & bottle).

I saw two road bikes (full kits) ahead of me commuting home yesterday (I was on a cross street) and decided to see just how fast the Cricket could go. After a few minutes (half-mile?) I caught them and pulled in behind to draft for about 2 miles (they were clipping along at about 20mph).

I really liked the double take when they finally realized I was behind them riding this....


For the record, I was working hard to keep up with them. I had a moment of "JoeyBike"-itis and considered scalping them before turning off into my neighborhood.... but I just decided to draft them because of the head wind we were all riding into.

Pleased overall so far.

ps.... What is a "cell"phone? Is that something a biologist uses?

pss... technically, I am an astrophysicist with many interests.

psss.... yes, 300 in regular old bowling. Has anyone done 300 in duck or candlestick - that would be impressive!

I am finding the Origami a pleasure to ride. (first week impressions)
* It is quick enough to get me to work in a reasonable amount of time (6 mile ride ~30 minutes).
* It is nimble (as it is smaller compared to my Xtracycle kid/shopping/van/utility) and gives me the freedom to meander along paths I don't normally think about using.
* It tucks in nicely either folded or hung up in my small office space.
* It makes the ride strangely more personal as I kind of just glide to work and look more at my surroundings and talk to people.
* It is unique around these parts, thus people (& students) keep asking me about it. (Top question: "Cool! How much $$$?" Next Question: "Where'd ya get it?")
* My wife now wants one (that means it is a winner - at least to me)
* It handles the road, gravel path, bike lanes, sidewalk (yes, a short bit...sorry), grassy bit, and (the unexpected new pit bull this morning - accelerates well) the other travel ways along my commute very well.

In awhile I will post more information after I collect more anecdotal data with more of a pro/con list of opinions. But, thus far I really dig the bike.

OK folks. This is my first post on any forum, EVER, so be gentle. Just took delivery of a shiny black Origami Cricket 7. My first folding bike. I tried a couple of suspensionless folders and they were tougher on my body on the mean streets of Bayonne. It's been a nice ride so far. Using this to get back in to cycling, plus give me a tinkering project. Like Dr. Joe, mostly needs a little adjusting and burn-in time. I'm sure I'll fix it until I break something.

The bell is integrated with the brake handles. Nice touch.

i found mine yesterday. it goes "tink" a fart could drown that out....
Fortunately i am adapt to yelling at obstacles in my way
