Anyone tried the Novara Fly By?

I've been going back and forth on which bike to buy.... Dahon, Tern, Bike Friday. Each day I think I've decided on a different make and model, then change my mind again.

It occured to me that maybe I should try a less expensive folding bike first and see if I really ride it often enough to justify spending $1,500+, I can always sell it and upgrade or keep it as a backup.

REI has the Flyby at a very reasonable price ($500). Anyone have experience with this bike or insight on its quality?

Thanks!

A friend who's a mechanic at REI has one and likes it. He pulled the chain covering off because it was rubbing and made noise, but so far that's been his only complaint. They're on sale right now,and being REI,you can always return it if there's any issues.

I had the original 8spd,fendered model. Replaced it with my Brompton because it was heavy and didn't fold as nice. I thought it had a better ride than the Brommie, and the adjustable handlepost was nice. Also had clearance for a wider range of tires than the Brompton.

Earlier models were Dahon-based, but I'm pretty sure the current model is Tern-based.

My husband and I bought a pair of FlyBys when REI offered a 20% member discount in early April. We purchased them for recreational use, and since we have other bikes, I can't say they've been put to very heavy use, but they are a ton of fun. We could not be happier with them. They are Tern-based, which has made it easy for us to add upgrades. We added ThorUSA Custom SKS Fender Sets (SKS) to both bikes. In addition, my bike (affectionately known as the - ahem - FlyGirl) has a BioLogic HoldAll basket attached to the stem with a KlickFix attachment. My husband added a BioLogic Portage 20 rear rack to his bike (also from ThorUSA). We also upgraded the stock saddles to Brooks....yes, we took our savings and put them into upgrades.

Pros: inexpensive folding bike sourced from a well-respected name in folding bikes, sold by one of the best equipment retailers in the US. Decent components and easy to customize. Fits a range of rider sizes and riding styles.

Cons: when compared to Tern, Brompton, etc., it is obviously more of a budget model.
