Clunking Brompton pedal -- and it's new!

I was tormented by a clunk in my folding pedal, so I replaced it with the new model, the one that goes on with a big allen wrench instead of the old, huge socket.

The clunk persisted, even louder, every time the left crank arm went over the top. It sounded like a ball peen hammer on an anvil. So I tore it down to and including the bottom bracket, regreased everything and reinstalled. Still clunking.

Just on a hunch -- and because I was out of ideas -- I replaced the new folding pedal with a spare non-folding pedal I had lying around. Clunk gone.

So, anyone have any brilliant ideas on how to banish this from the new folding pedal? Or is it just defective?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

So you've had two bad folding pedals? Crazy. I'd try exchanging the 'new' folding pedal, and see if the problem stays away,or comes back. If it stays away, you just had some bad luck. If it comes back,I've no idea what to say;I can't see how a folding pedal on it's own would cause the noise. Brompton pedals lock pretty solid,I could see the old one getting loose with age,but the new one should be fine.

I would look for a different reason. What about the non folding pedal?

When you replaced the folding pedal with a non folding (just to try), are you sure that is the only change you made or could it be something else you did at the same time that solved the problem?

I have replaced the foldingpedals on the small wheelers I use often with detatchable pedals. Just sayin..
