    Japanese Puppy

I just got a crusty rusty RoadPuppy i bought from a vintage bike forum.

i took it in the garage for a check out. Did about 30-45mins of secret sauce cleaning and tht red is shining through. i am attaching the before rusty, the post 45mins of cleaning and a pic one of the guys in the other forum found of a perfect one hich looks like it is in a russian museum. I think i can get it close to the shape in the russian museum pic.

    IMG-20130924-00542.jpgIMG-20130924-00543.jpgIMG-20130924-00544.jpgIMG-20130924-00545.jpgIMG-20130924-00547.jpgrussianmuseum.jpgrusty.jpgrusty2.jpg

and i have never seen bike tires in such a state before. completely smushed and super dried on. i think i am going to have to cut them off with a steak knife.

i also just won a perfect road puppy on ebay! once it comes i will post a pick of the "litter".

    anyone else have any puppies?

so nice... i've almost purchased one of these several times. looks like the one you got on ebay has an unusual folding stem. pretty cool. hope you are able to clean up the rusty one successfully. keep us updated with pics!

so i finally got my "new" road puppy today and it was a mess

I get it in the mail and it has been repainted!!!

    Here is the ebay listing
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/121174771379...#ht_158wt_1428

Here are the pics. the center tube had a metal flap tht they didnt even take off when painting!!! and under the fender tag...

it was about 125 to buy and 74 to ship, so it isnt going to put me in the poor house, but the listing said vintage, and there is no mention of refurbished, repainted etc. "asking questions" should not be a get out of jail free card.

i sent them an email asking for my money back and i will return the bike. i am hoping that they seem to be a serious ebayer they will do the right thing. Otherwise i am well prepared to complain to every known authority and demolish their ebay rating as much as possible.so far it has been 12 hours and no answer

well.. these bikes pop up periodically for sale. sometimes they are in very good condition and sell for a little more than you paid. i dont think you got ripped off, but surely it wasnt an amazing deal.

the seller seems like a vintage items reseller. the paint job appears to be "historical" i.e., old. they probably had no knowledge about the fact that it was repainted. i think you probably knew that the bike would require some restoration on your part for it to be rideable (if it was your intention to ride it.)

if on the other hand, you were thinking you were getting an amazing deal on a collector's item, you should have done more research.

if you return the bike, you will be out 70usd for the return shipping...

if i were you, i would just mark this down to experience, clean the bike up and determine what it will take to get it running. if it seems too much effort or expense to be worth it, then you can always sell it on to someone else and re-coop some of your money.

it's definitely an interesting version.. i've never seen one with that kind of folding stem mechanism ...

i did a search for these and found about 6 of them globally for sale in different countries. one in brazil, one in california, minnesota ... so they are out there and all different prices. The funny thing is it is NEVER this model. i figured this was a later model given the setup and the alternative color. the prices are also all over the place. $600, $900, $995.95 ive even seen $2999! it seems to be a little all over the place, but i am still thinking since most people have either not heard of or never seen the bike that there cant be more than a couple of hundred floating around. i would love to see how many were actually sold.

i new it wld take work to restore and i have about 15 i am restoring, but what i didnt know was tht it was repainted. Even if thre is pain underneath i am cool with tht

yep.. 190 dollars of experience, just what i needed

im goign to see if i can get some form of reduction on the price at least from them and then i will attempt to strip it and see if it has any of the original paint underneath. i really dont think it does though from looking at the bare metal chips. =/ ... you want a $200 folding bike? and you are right the folding mechanism is fantastic. ill take some pix and slap on my blog. http://rustysi.blogspot.com/

i also found these adds around the net i thought u would like there is even more on google books, but the full versions are not accessible.

    hmmm...

did you keep the bike or return it to the seller? i think it might be worth it to get a few packs of 0000 steel wool and get to work on that puppy..

    Yah I kept it

I also used a bit of 'goo off' on the chrome bits and the Grey spray paint came off and it didn't look terrible underneath, but and part that had paint on it originally like the fenders seems to have been stripped of the old paint.

I'm so close to that 90% mark on my first puppy, just having trouble finding the time to finish up a few things and put it all back together. I'm going to get it to 90% and then take a break with it and move on to one of my dutch bikes so I can ride it! :-) the only bikes I have which are rideable is a Jamis 2007 racing bike and a 1960something rollfast. So a few times a week I take the rollfast out for a spin. I need a better touring bike for the nights. :-)

wonder what it would be like to modernize one of these road puppies? how much do they weigh? i'm trying to imagine one with a nice wheelset, sealed bearing bottom bracket and a nice japanese singlespeed crankset.. think- sugino...

the box said 41lbs. I would say at least 37/38lbs. At this point in my restores the orig paint one is very loose when i first got it. The repainted one is very tight and i could imagine riding it. I am more of a purist...to a point, i think new tires and tubes are fine to slap on in order to ride it. Also the thing takes 14" tires which are a pain to find for a good deal.

my wife would kill me, but i am thinking about trying to get another puppy.

Here is your chance! a little high priced as it looks to me to be a very well done repaint. I've seen about 6-8 different puppys now and they all have the ark maroon coloring:

As an update to my own resto which is really more of a preservation here are some pix:

    How i got it

after 3 weeks of after work and weekend. probably a good 30hours. If anyone knows where to get tires I would really appreciate it!

you'll need to measure those rims. they are either 305mm (16") or 254mm (14"). from the looks, probably 254mm and it takes a fat tire. i would like to see schwalbe bike apples on that bike, but only if you got a new wheelset too. kenda cheapy bmx tires will do the trick. you can get them just about anywhere..

5 NOS tires on ebay for 15$ (might look cool with white tires)

i measured the rim and it is exactly 12" ... i read on another forum they are 14 x 1 3/8" but they have a strange rim tht has a very narrow "valley". [ Not sure what you would call it ] but the opening where you wuold put the tire rim and tube.

    the two gumwalls look perfect.

    you think this would fit?

first of all, you need to invest .99 cents in a metric tape measure. haha. it's kind of a requirement for bike stuff.

if that rim is 12" then its going to take a 16" 305mm tire.

    this would be cool:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/16-Inch-Bike...item53f13860a3

please remember that decimal is different that fractional... example 16 x 1.75 or x 1.5 or x 2.125 is the size you need, not 16 x 1 3/8. fractional will not fit you wheel.
