Still Pedaling

I just came across this video showing a guy (bloke if you're from London), riding the Cycle Superhighway 2 with a video cam. One needs huge "you-know-what's" to venture on this road. I call it "Confrontation Alley".

So, are there any of you London FB enthusiasts brave enough for the journey.

I've done it quite a few times on the Brompton... cycling in London is generally ****e and fairly ridiculous, but I can't say I've had any dangerous encounters on that route except for at bow roundabout. Most of East London is a total ****hole and the mental state of drivers and cyclists reflects that.

Yes .. and that video is obviously not in rush hour(s) ..... it gets a LOT busier in both directions. Ditto most main roads in London. There are quieter routes often are less direct, but for some these are 'for softies' ....

Added to crazy car, van and truck drivers there are the crazy cyclists !! - using the commute to train (often with Strava), these guys (yes - always testosterone fuelled) will do anything to get ahead - its a race ! : Red lights - optional, weaving - of course, pedestrians - "get out of the ****ing way". Human powered racing is good in the right place, but these pious, arrogant, cyclists give us all a bad name and fuel the contempt that many UK motorists have for cyclists.

Sorry for the negativity, but I don't give a dead rat's a$$ for the Lycra mob as you Londoner's call them. Bloody bunch of cycling snobs for the most part. So many of them have an arrogant attitude riding around wanting others to think that they are pro cyclists. When in fact they are nothing more than a bunch of Tour de France wannabees in their Halloween costumes. I've met a few of them lately walking into a local bike shop wheeling their over priced steads in for service wearing their Lycra pajamas and look the other way when you try to great them with a pleasantry. Rotten snobs. Reminds me of my motorcycle days when I had the same problem with those weekend warrior Harley boys. I rode an Intruder 1400 chopper type bike with straight pipes and a type 2 kit installed on the carbs. I had a great time blowing them Harley snobs off the road. I had a few little races with them, and I'm proud to say that I left them in the dust. Reminds me of a saying we had for Harley riders, "ride a Harley, ride the best, ride a mile, truck the rest" . We used to see many of them on the backs of pickup trucks. Those where some of the "good ole days" for me.

Glad you had a chuckle. When I first saw your handle, "Human_Amplifier", my first thoughts that you were a cockney from the east end of London. My mom was from there, and could she ream off those cockney rhymes. I use some of them on my friends out here and they look at me with the most puzzled look. Hey guys, let's go out for a "pig's ear" I would say. No idea that I just mentioned let's go out for a beer . Wait till I put on my "arms and rocks" and "apples and pears" for my "whistle and flute". They honestly think I speak a foreign language. What fun!!

So you are from the Yorkshire Dales perhaps, the area where they filmed one of the greatest TV series of all times -- "All Creatures Great and Small". My wife and I watch it over and over and over and over.

Yikes... that's a sketchy bike lane in the video in the original post!

Chicago used to have lanes that were dangerous like that in some areas, but the new mayor has improved biking so much in the past few years. I love our new Protected Bike Lanes here in Chicago!

Using text, the following describes the physical layout of the bike lanes (from overhead):

PEDESTRIAN SIDEWALK
BIKE LANE --->
<--- BIKE LANE
VEHICLE PARKING / TURN LANES
VEHICLE TRAFFIC --->


So as shown above (and in the video below), in many areas of a Protected Bike Lane, you ride between the sidewalk and parked cars... the traffic is kept away from the bike lanes. (Not all lanes in the video below are protected mind you.)
