So is Bikefriday the only company that makes folding bikes which fold vertically?

Hi there,

curious, is this the case?

I've used a side-folding bike before and it is definitely awkward. Looking at videos of bikefridays, having the fold be in the middle, beneath the seat, is pretty ingenious.

The Brompton has the rear wheel and triangle swing under and forward. I think the Airnimal also has a model or two that is similiar.

Bromptons did it first, but Bike Fridays are amazing in their own way. Bromptons for their super-compact fold, BFs for their great ride quality.

Yeah, folding a Dahon in half is really quite annoying sometimes. It feels so finicky, especially if you're in a crowded area.

And:
Smartcog Mint Smartcog > i > MINT,
Dahon Jifo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yNUyeAF4v8 which appears to have licensed the design from Smartcog,
Dahon EEZZ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kaKu1u4RcU which looks like the Smartcog fold with a different latch.

Don't forget the Tyrell FX, a beautiful bike.

Bike Friday ? It's more a Diagonal than a vertical fold ..

Where Bike Friday (tikit) is unique in that they are in more than one size, and ...

made for the customer as the order comes up in the build Queue.

the way they do it the handlebars and seat adjustment are unchanged ..
Bromton and many others the seat post is telescoping down, so has to be re-adjusted every fold .

In addition to the many vertical fold bikes already mentioned, off the top of my head:

BigFish
Mobiky
Anemos
Dahon Qix for 2015 (?)
Grace Gallant/MIT
Oyama
CarryMe
Topeak Jango
Xootr Swift
Rhine

On the other hand, you can set many Dahon-style fold bikes up so they can be folded/unfolded with no lifting, which is an advantage for some users.

Also,if you have a rack, you can leave a pannier on the right side while the bike is folded, and even roll it along.

Yes. I have an older Joey, you remove the front wheel and to fold it the rear wheel goes inside the front fork.
