Commuting Bike with a some speed for the weekends

Hi guys,

considering a few bikes for daily commuting and some speed runs for the weekend. Ability to roll well is a priority

Shortlisted Birdy, Brompton, IF Reach. Otherwise the Dahon or Tern

Any recommendations which i should take up?

how about KHS F20-R 451? seems that it should also be in this list.

simisimi - Where are you located? This is a worldwide forum. It won't help your quest much to get a bunch of recommendations on bikes that are not available in your area/region. :)

Bike Fridays Pocket rocket travel bikes roll on skinny 451 narrow high pressure 20" tires.. Fitted with what ever road group you wish ..

then again, fold it up and stow it in the back of your hard to keep it under the speed limit car, and there you go..

park the LeMans Bentley outside the congestion Tax zone , and ride the folder into your brokerage Job in the City.

Custom parts picks are a possibility with Bike Friday's Tikit.. made to order in Eugene Oregon USA.

Commuting usually is associated with Internal hubs, fenders carriers and big fat tires which all is somewhat not really usefull for a go fast bike ....
than u can switch tires and gets ome hugh pressure skinny ones, maybe even get a go fast front wheel ...
loads of options ...
better know where u are and what you really want ... :-)

Without question a Swift. But you should have a look a the sticky. Weight, budget, how tall you are, location, etc.

simisimi 05-06-14 05:02 AM

Based in Asia Singapore. Yea will go down to shops and test out a couple of bikes
@jur - whats swift?

By roll well, I assume you mean roll well while folded. IMO, that limits the list considerably.

The BF tikit rolls very well while folded ... their 20" models don't roll conveniently. Dahons and many other frames that fold like a wallet roll sort of OK if you can keep it together ... often depends on whether the stem/handlebar folds inside or outside the fold. Bromptons roll OK on smooth surfaces with roller blade wheels. I noticed that someone makes an accessory for a Birdy allowing it to roll Brompton-style. The best bike for rolling while folded in my experience is the STRIDA. The IF Reach looks promising, but I have zero experience with it.

What gearing are you looking for? How sensitive are you to fit?

simisimi 05-07-14 11:55 PM

Yes rolling well does narrow down to few specific models. Had played with dahon and tern and doesn't seem to do that well. Think I had narrowed down to the brompton, birdy and BF tikit. Probably will try out strada too.

not too knowledgable about gearing and fitting though so I guess generic specs should be fine

Another seggestion is a mezzo ori dependong where you are based. How rear rack rollers and a full rolling kit is available or can be made up. The mezzo has a small fold between the brompton and birdie but is easier to alter gear/hubs than a brompton.

Its an option that can really go quick with uprated gearing and drop bar mods. See the upgrading a mezzo thread.

Birdies dont roll well when folded generally. Dont know if a racked version does better. However, easist bikle to carry , in my experience, due to ability to hold by triangle frame and seems to balance well and light weight.

Diblasi make a full rolling bike, but bit heavy.
Janko flick another outside option.

marxmini 05-08-14 03:49 AM

brompton S6R. fold (compact), straight bar (sporty/speed), rack with eezy wheels (daily commuting, rolling), 6 gears (daily commuting), 50t crank (compromise size for daily commuting and speed, 54t for more speed), kojak tires (speed, low rolling resistance).

jur 05-08-14 03:52 AM

Ohhhhh, I thought you meant roll well as in ride fast. There aren't many folders that roll well and ride fast. Swift does not roll well. Perhaps not at all.

From your name I already suspected you are from sg. All the bikes you've narrowed down to is comfortably in the S$2,200+ range. It depends on what kind of commuting you're looking at that you need a folding bike.

You're planning on multi-modal commuting? MRT/Bus? If your top priority is speed and agility and upgrade options, Brompton may not be what you're looking for. It's a decent enough ride imo, but no one's going to accuse it of being a beast.

That said, no bus driver or MRT staff has ever stopped me when I'm rolling my Brompton past them. You won't find a more multi-modal-friendly bike than a Brompton.

Its an intersting connundrum ....
commuting ....
fast ride on the wekend
and has to roll WELL when folded

There is no such thing, sorry ...

for commuting and riding fast, there is a possibilty ... like a Dahon Speed or Mu or or... Tern D8 P9 or or
than put a big heavy marathon No flat on it... than you buys a second set of wheels like Carbon ones or Pro Wheels and fut some Duranos Ultrmos or high pressure narrow tires on it... you will be able to switch easily

Or a little more involved, which would take care of the rolling when folded issue ... get a Link framed bike from Tern ( like the link p9 or d8 ) add a Trolley rack.... for super nice rolling ..Id say the best rollin in the industry ... and on the weekends take it off ( 4 allen bolts ) to go fast ...

Best Thor

Speed is easier to achieve with a Tailwind .

mcmoose 05-08-14 02:24 PM

As fietsbob suggested, it may be worth talking with the Bike Friday folks.

fietsbob 05-08-14 02:44 PM

They will ship to Singapore .. Have before.. to another forum member ..

This was my thought as well...

keyven 05-08-14 11:36 PM

Or you can try the Tikit at MBS. If the bike was not going to be used for touring, then Tikit is your best bet in BF's line-up.

gringo_gus 05-09-14 01:58 AM

this is an ongoing question, and of course it is in search of the holy grail, and of course it depends where you are in the world, and what kind of commute you have (bi-modal ? bi-sexual ?), and how strong you are and all these things.

But the pleasure of this kind of question, and this forum is in the conversation more than the specific answer. So, how about an airnimal (and why must your bike fold, just to throw in the mix, - storage, to put on a bus/train, because you love folders ?)

marxmini 05-09-14 04:07 AM

another option is the dahon vector x10 (maybe not available anymore) or tern x10. fast and light. no need to roll. just carry it.

simisimi 05-09-14 06:44 AM

lots of valuable inputs. thanks yea usually take public transport to work and ride back home about 30-40 km. so the roll should be preferred.

ThorUSA 05-09-14 08:15 AM

brings up the question :
rolling the bike in folded position .... every day .... 5 minutes
riding the bike 40 km home ...every day .... 130 minutes 0r 7800 secunds

thats 7000 seconds you wish for a better riding bike ....

not to mention the weekends when you want to ride faster and longer ....
