How easy is it to find a Brompton second-hand? Preliminary findings

surveying secondhand foldies online, using keyword brompton

craigslist canada (default) 0
craigslist Taiwan (default) 0

- craigslist, Canada (vancouver)

WANTED "folding bike... dahon, giant or Brompton.... 2 bikes for $400." Obviously even more unrealistic than I am. Bloody Canadian cheapsakes!

craigslist, japan (tokyo) 0
craigslist, philippines 0

craigslist, USA, seattle

several, e.g.

- FOR SALE "Brompton SR6 - $1500" And that's with 200 km on it!

- WANTED "Brompton folding bikes - $850.Will pay cash" Wow...

craigslist, USA (New York)

- FOR SALE "Brompton folding basket ... Retails $88, asking $70, no negotiating." I'd say that's a high. price for something used. And he 's not. 'asking' if there's no wiggle room in price

- FOR SALE brand- new 6-gear w/ rear rack, fenders, bag mount, "P" handlebars. Paid 1700, asking. $1200

- WANTED. Won't pay near retail

craigslist , USA, Orange County

- FOR SALE S2L 4-year old with flat tire $1240

- FOR SALE 6-speed M damaged rear fender , needs tuneup, $800. Another dame needing rear tensioner. $725

craigslist, USA, Oklahoma City 0

craigslist, USA, SF Bay

WANTED, no details except has to be a Brompton and S type best

- Chicago 0
- Cinncinati 0
- cleveland 0
- columbus 0
- dallas 0
- denver 0
- detroit 0
- fresno 0

OK, you get the idea. Question is is it really such a seller's market or are Bromptons being sold on consigment in bike shops or a different online marketplace?

Didn't note details but some Mezzos, Terns and a Bike Friday, seen.

Just learned a workaround to the geographically restricting and very time-consiming search method on Craigslist. Here are my findings.

Again so far, Brompton only, this time as "Brompton folding"

Over half the ads are deleted, presumably because the bike sold (or seller decided to keep it) So, it appears there are more buyers than sellers. Did they sell for asking price? I do not know how to determine this other than monitor a site over time.

Italy

- WANTED "any condition Whaaaat? How many lonely heart ads do see for 'any woman who will marry me '? It us usually more specific, like 'leggy brunette who is Catholic and likes dogs'

USA

- FOR SALE 2-year old, 900 miles of use, Brooks saddle, T bag. New 2150, $1500 firm. Do cars hold their prices so well?

- WANTED no budget mentioned, just 'good working order' How often does a man call an escort agency and ask for anyone perfect, price no object (if they do, they're making life tough for this Delta male)

- FOR SALE - M3L, mudguards, 3-speed, Brooks classic saddle, $1920 new, price $1200.

i used to buy bromptons overseas (hong kong mostly and USA) and sell them back home. the hong kong official dealer, mr. lee of flying ball, told me that the demand was so high that their import of brompton bikes all get sold in two to three weeks. there was no way to choose colors or configurations. what the they had was what you got. there was even a time they did not have anything in stock because brompton UK could not supply them.

from my experience of buying and selling bromptons, i can say that the resale value of these folding bikes are higher than any other folding bike. people who have them hang on to them and never sell. this is why very few are available in the second hand market.

In Toronto I do see a brompton here and there like one every 2 months or so one pops up they go for $1000+ here also. Craigslist Toronto you can easily find dahons, but when you search for bike friday's, bromptons and terns you might see one pop up like once in a blue moon and when they do they aren't exactly %50 of their price for those brand name ones. Oh yeah but most of the dahons they are selling here are the old ones from the early 80's-90's which they overprice them like over $200!?

any folder here on craigslist that's under $200 is either those no name brands or that famous schwinn tango.

If I really wanted a brompton I would just probably buy it new in the store for just like 40%-50% more at least I'll get the 2014 version and I'm not desperate for a ride since i have enough bikes to ride to work. Last one I saw in town was a orange M3L for like $1100 probably 2012 or so while a new one with all the updates is around $1500 before taxes. not enough incentive there for me to get a used one if I actaully was looking for a brompton and already pouring this much money into it already.

EDIT: Speaking of rare breeds just found this on kijiji!

http://www.kijiji.ca/v-road-bike/cit...ationFlag=true

from winnipeg and wow never seen one before for sale used!

I have a permanent search running on ebay for anything Brompton. Very rarely does a Brompton come on. About a year ago, a virtually new one came on, the buy it now price was $450, a major bargain. I bought it immediately, within minutes of the listing start, needed or not. I still have it, planning to sell it in the near future, to get a titanium version instead.

My next folder will only be a titanium Brompton. No more second class. Cheap is very expensive. Prefer to be used and in good shape though. I would however consider a bicycle by some company in China or Taiwan if they did a brilliant knock-off *that can take Brompton/Flamingo parts*.

just to add to more of the craziness I find some of these owners are totally delusional on the price!

Brompton 2011 - 6 Sp. Folding Bike | other | City of Toronto | Kijiji

I found out our local shop sell them for only $600 more ($2265 CDN after taxes) you get a BRAND NEW one with all the 2014 updates (i heard from the B owners here there's been alot of good changes from 2012 to 2014) and with a rack!?!

http://www.curbside.on.ca/collections/brompton

what kills me even more is people that live in Toronto usually buy in the states or pick them at the border which i do alot of, and nycewheels sells ready to go M6L's after rate conversions for exactly the same price as that guy was selling used, I really don't get some of these guys it's not like something that is entirely sold out and like over 6 months wait time unless you are buying total custom or getting a moulton.

FWIW, Brompton's Main frame and steering mast is always steel , only the F/R ends are Titanium .. seat post is steel now .

with the steel rear portion there is a Pump included in a Mount.

BTW used Bromptons are more common in UK where they are made , the other side of the globe.

To give it a positive spin, think about it in social work category. You are saving money, time and effort for quite a few of us following your knock-off adventure.

That's actually about what that bike would go for on eBay.

buying a brompton is a good investment.

the other significant upgrade is the new double-wall rims with angled drilling for super-strong rear IGH build.

what?! People that run the price up that high either have alot of money to throw around on used equipment or haven't actually tried shopping online, most of those online available shops like nycewheels would ship you your door a brand new one for almost the SAME price and someone would rather bid for an older used one just blows my mind.

Here in Japan Bromptons seldom show up on Craigslist. However, there are always at least 10 available on Yahoo Auction at any time. The usually sell for about $1000 used, in decent shape. Beaters or baslet cases sell for about half that.
