Hello,

My girlfriend and I are in the process of moving to vancouver island, where we will be riding our new Tern folding bikes.

Since we will be doing a lot of riding by the seaside, I am wondering if there is anything we should be doing to protect the bikes from corrosion or rust?

..wash it off with rain water .. there will be plenty of that .. temperate rain forests ...

if you were moving to the Bahamas ... know the sea is saltier where it's warm..

there are Haline density currents in the ocean .. the water drops its salt% towards the poles , on the surface,
and that current runs into the deeper oceans then around the globe..

Frequent wash, wax, lube; expect exposed steel bolt heads, cables, and assorted other steel components to rust anyway. (New England seacoast perspective.)

Only if no Oxygen were present then Rust would not happen .. But I seem to need O2 to live..

Rust happens. If you don't like it, move to a desert.

We will take your advice. I just need to find a good wax.

P.s. I do have a winter home in the desert...that comes with a whole other set of bike problems.

One thing you might consider is a singlespeed or 3/7/8/11sp internal gear hub out back. One of the components most prone to rust is the chain, there are also steel components on derailleurs which will rust as well. KMC (chain manufacturer) makes a chain model S10, which is stainless steel, another one of their chains is specifically marketed with "rust buster" coating over a plain steel chain. IGH drivetrain with either of these chains will be the most rust free.
