need RD for a folding bike with 16" wheels

A friend has a cheap 6 speed Kent folder with 16" wheels, and snapped the rear derailleur in half.

I had an extra shimano tourney RD, put it on but it is too big, it hits the ground as we shift to a bigger cog.

LBS did not have a mini RD.

Anyone know an online source for an inexpensive, compact 6 speed RD?

No.. any cheap RD will function .. 6 speeds refers to the gears not the RD, it just shoves the chain sideways ..

the big cog has to be smaller to let you use a shorter cage RD.. lose the whole wheel get a 3 speed IGH and then all you cope with is a chain tensioner ..

but that wont be cheap .

have you tried to find the minimum chain length that works? then the bottom pulley wont stick down so much.

what about those dahon neo's derailleurs they seem to be small enough and are basically shimano parts.

Special Parts Dahon Tern and others

they are tiny and compact which would be perfect for a 16 inch wheel, you really have limited options when you start using derailleurs on small wheels which the chain can pick up alot of dirt easily. Fietsbob's suggestion works best but it's also very expensive needing to rebuild an entire rear wheel. Doing that might end up as the same cost as another kent folder so I guess that defeats the purpose.

NEOS Derailleur only fits bikes which are designed for this derailleur。you can't mount it on a bike with a standard drop out hanger.

you can choose some low-end short cage derailleur for city-bike. e.g. Shimano TY-18,TY-21,FT-30,etc.

I think any short cage rear derailer would be fine with regards to clearance. But is the Kent folder indexed?

If shortness is all you care about, there are a bunch of single chainring groups out there that have short tension pulleys ... I think shorter than the short cage (SS) derailers.

Here is the Shimano Zee group.

Shimano - Zee
