Vintage Brompton offered for sale by vendor unaware of the value

I thought a separate thread is justified because of the rare nature of these bikes. If the bidding is slow, I may get it myself.

Hmmm...maybe you could use it as a mock-up for a titanium Brompton...

It appears that you have to pick up the bike, no shipping. So unless you're local to the seller, it may not be a good deal.

I may be wrong, but that doesn't appear to be a real Brompton, unless its one of their much older models. What caught my eye was the small writing, which I could not quite make out, on the Brompton label. Should that not read "Made in England"? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but might it not be a fake?

The title for the OP is "Vintage Brompton offered for sale by vendor unaware of the value". Compare the eBay listing to other vintage Bromptons and they look the same to me.

Yes, you are right. What confused me was the writing on the label, when it made reference to the US. I thought Brompton was a fully functional UK company.

the point is, this is a very early production model brompton; probably from 1982-83. it appears to be in very good condition. a collector's item.

here is another - note the serial number for this particular bike is 206 ...

Question: How was the US involved with this bike? I was under the impression it was a full UK venture.

i assume you are referring to the decal on the bike that says, " patents granted in the UK and the USA". this just means the company filed for, and was granted, a patent in the United States.

"A patent is a set of exclusive rights granted by a sovereign state to an inventor or assignee for a limited period of time in exchange for detailed public disclosure of an invention. An invention is a solution to a specific technological problem and is a product or a process.[SUP][1][/SUP][SUP]:17[/SUP] Patents are a form of intellectual property."

Thanks smallwheeler. I appreciate the detailed explanation. I was wondering if they might have planned on manufacturing them here in the US. I guess its not a bad idea to apply for patents in other countries so as to protect their inventions. I don't know if this was the case with the Brompton. Just wondering.

Thanks again smallwheeler.

Cheers
Wayne

You're kidding! No offense to any old Brompton lovers out there... but I got to say the modern incarnations are much more appealing.

Only 500 were ever made, that was one of the original pilot production run. Historical/collector value only. I'm not a collector, hence I wasn't interested in paying big bucks..
