As one who never seems to leave a bike configuration alone, I love the adaptability of the Eclipse and the use of disc brakes. I'm just waiting for someone in the SS/FG crowd to chime in about the ugliness of all the superfluous bosses and cable stops...

That said, I'm more impressed with and excited aboutthe different new Dahon designs shown in another thread than I am with what seems to be incremental change from Tern. Understandable, as Tern is a new company just getting off the ground, but I do hope we see innovation from them in the future.

Not trying to troll; just saying that as a bike geek I like seeing the three very different approaches to folding bikes shown in the Dahon vid more than the three variations on a theme shown in the Tern vid. I'd not mind owning a sample of either brand, and indeed as mentioned above, as someone who frequently meddles with bike configuration, the Eclipse is intriguing because it is more adaptable than any of the Dahons shown, gives the Swift a run for the money regarding potential setup versatility.

It's a good age for folders and those who appreciate them.

small details like Handlebar clamps and seatpost clamps . a real cool foldable adjustable Stem for larger bikes and and and ... Not quite interesting yet as stuff needs to get through the pipeline. but Dahon has definetly shown new improvemts and ideas in other areas than the clinch, Curl, QUibbs bikes.


Tern has new stuff, like wheels for example which are to die for. and again that totally upgradeable Eclipse is a stunner. They have long model cycles, adding a few models and scratching a couple different ones. Well done with their sesnible approach for the new bikes ..

I like the Eclipse on paper.. plenty of 507 tires available for a variety of surfaces and year round riding.. disks and the EBB are nice touches .. great platform for those wanting to taylor a bike to their needs ..

EBB and discs are a logical combo .. the chain tensioning doesn't force the Caliper for the disc be moved

to follow the rear tensioning of hub Axle moving in a slot.

hope the way you need to turn the eccentric to do that is well done.

I don't think you are going to see massive design changes from Tern at all. They are more leaning towards the Brompton end of model improvements and still have full available parts for their bikes for long term instead of 2-3 years and then toss everything into a bin and start over new like how Dahon does it. which is why you'll see frame tweaks but not massive changes which looks like they are compatible with the older models if things break.

No,you use sliding dropouts. Much better than any EBB design I've seen. Make the right one removable and you can do derailleur,SS/FG,or IGH,as well as belt drive.

From my perspective, since Tern likes to position themselves as a higher performance folding bike brand. I like the new paint jobs and the upgradability of the Eclipse, as well as the new hydroformed forks....they're gorgeous but bull bars and drop bars really make the fold bulky. The frames are perfect for now. What I would concentrate on is how to get high performance parts to fold compactly. Maybe make the bullbars and new drop bars fold somehow so that you could use the verge x18 and x30 as a legitimate commuter that could easily be brought on the train/bus. I envision some kind of swivel on the drop bars and brake/shifters. It seems all the improvements were made to make the bikes more visually appealing but no improvements to make the fold better, which is why you buy a FOLDING bike. Everyone is concentrating on the frame but there's definitely room for improvement on the handlebars. I wish I could ditch my flat bars for something more ergonomic and aggressive while maintaining a nice tight fold. Oh, how about a new NEOS derailleur that can handle a ten speed? I dunno, I like the forks but I've never heard anyone really complain about the old forks.

The Curl has yet to see production and this iteration seems different than others, so that's new. The EZ was new last year, and was the Cinch even available last year? They might have introduced the tech previously, but this seems like the first for a coupe of production models. Maybe not new, but compared to Tern? Definitely different. EZ with 3sp is akin to the second of the two Tern models -- previous edition frames and frame tech with new components hung on them.

Did Brompton introduce anything new and different this year...?

Resurrecting this thread, is there any news about the Eclipse Uno coming here next year? What little I can find on the web is pretty vague about US import, but I can't imagine they would skip it.

well I do but That's on my 26" wheel Koga Miyata WTR trekking bike . there is a ISO disc mount on the slider

rear end is rather wide its 135 inside the slide , as it the slider and the frame part are machined in 1/4" Al plate.

so its around 160 mm wide .. had to get used to riding heels out to not kick the chainstays.

Personally, I find that one speed isn't enough: Even if only riding in a flat city, it takes energy to get started from a red light.

I do like the clean look of not having a derailler, but in this case, an Alfine 8 would have been a good idea, IMHO, even though it's 1680g.

Especially considering this bike has disk brakes and retails for about $1.000.

The Eclipse Uno reminds one of the Dahon Cadenza Solo of a few years back. I thought the 'blank canvas' of that bike was brilliant - the marketplace didn't agree! Thor and other Tern dealers are prudent to restrict their inventorying of this model.
