For those of you who think so read some of the links below. Any Brompton users who would also like to add their own experience to dispel this urban myth about the bike, please feel free!

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but the fact remains this wonderful little folder is capable of rides well beyond 6 miles and that is a fact!

How tall are you? I'm 6',and no way would I ride distance on my Brompton. I'd use my Speed Pro TT. Or a touring bike with couplers.

Now I wonder who this Italian dude is working for? Reminds me of a story many years ago about the Suzuki Samurai. Reports were that the little jeep like vehicle was prone to tipping over. So a car dealer in the US decided to prove or disprove the report. He put the little jeep through its paces driving fast tight circles doing similar tests that the report mentions and never did he once come close to tipping the Samurai. One wonders who makes up these false reports and why, and for who. I guess the Chrysler corporations sales on jeeps were being threatened. Like I said, who this Italian dude working for.

I ride my Brompton almost every day, and I can ride mine a whole lot farther than six miles. I have no doubt that someone who is in shape to do so can ride a century with it. Its a comfortable smooth riding bike. BS rains supreme in the corporate world.

Exactly the same height as you. I have a Dahon Jetstrem EX with the same gearing as yours. I'm not saying it isn't suited to longer distances as is my Pacific Reach IF. What I'm saying is people are wrong in stating that the Brompton is only suitable for specified short distances. There is preference and fact. The Brompton turned out to be a more versatile bike than people realised and although it wasn't designed for touring it is most certainly fact that is suitable for more than short commutes!

I think most people on these forums know the brommie is a versatile bike. its better suited to longer journeys than fast short urban ridding imo due to the upright position and rear suspension.

I have several Brommies as patients so get to ride them as well as my own smaller wheeled bikes and I get the same comments about not being able to ride them any distance.

Tomorrow I am going out for 150km on my Moulten... this is a route I have ridden on my P20 countless times.

Absolutely. That is a huge plus for FB riders. And if the good Samaritan's car is rather full, I can sit with the folded Brommie on my lap. It might be a tad uncomfortable, but it's good enough to get my nackered butt back home.

Thanks for linking to my site. Here's another long ride (130k) on a Brompton which it's more than capable of.

My longest ride thus far on the Brompton is 79 miles. I ride 30-60 miles pretty routinely. I logged 4200 miles on it last year, and I didn't accumulate them all on my 3 mile commute. Until a few months ago, it was my only bike, so I used it for everything from short commutes to long joy rides. I now also have a Tern Verge, which is somewhat better for long distances, and much better for hills, but in many ways I still enjoy riding the Brompton more.

Can a Brommie do an igh, such as a Nexus 8 speed hub? I'm curious, since gearing is what has kept me away from a Brompton.

I can't do a nexus 8 in standard form as the over lock diameter is 112ish rather then a standard 135mm. Hense the hybrid 6 speed. There is an SA 8 speed that goes on without modifying the rear triangle. Yeah it puts me off Brompton also.
If you want an alternative standard hub you need to force the frame or get a custom build. I opted for a mezzo due to this reason amongst others.

The gearing range can be made 341% with no frame mods and not much expense, cheaper than Alfine 8sp which is 307%. Buy a 2-sp Brompton, and install a 5-sp wide range wheel which is a drop-in replacement for the existing wheel. 10 speeds over 341%.

So the excuse of gearing for staying away from the Brompton is invalid.

It's not compatable with brifters, shimano or sram etc.
I can't run a dualdrive hub.
5 speed SA hub is unreliable to adjust
8 speed SA has reliability issues?
6 speed is a double shift every other change.
the gears have large jumps between them which I don't like on the wide range versions.

Gearing range is not the issue but there are other valid rationales for avoiding a non standard rear axle rear triangle.

I would be great if shimano made a, 8 speed sti IHG for 112 OLD for the brommie.

It is valid for me, as I want simplicity. The way you advise is fine for you, but not for everyone. I pop a wheel off and back on my way. Something breaks I go right to my LBS and get it fixed, my way.

Not everyone on this forum is a skilled tinkerer, like you are. I also don't have time or the space to diy. Hence an 8 Speed Shimano Nexus (not even an Alfine) or Sturmey-Archer hub is what I require for a Brompton to be acceptable to me.

I don't settle, no matter how good it is, if I need to worry about the future repairs being an issue. My NuVinci N360 hub taught me that,... Never again.

So, anyone got a link to the 8 speed Sturmey-Archer hub that works on a Brommie? That would definitely get me saving for one (a Brompton).

custom modifiers have taken the torch to Bromptons.. to make them accept other drivetrains.

I sprang for the cost of a 2 speed Internal gear crank .

now the 3 speed has a high range [54:15] and a reduction geared low range '/,2.5 lower 21.6:15
it is almost plug and play ..
