I think in traffic you may be able to arrive fresher with the right clothing and weight saving and gear selection.
As a physio student I needed to turn up clean for praticals!!
I had an airtex coat, much more breathable than a fleece and airtex ice hockey replica vest. The bag was carried on the bike and my dual drive conversion meant I could end the hilly section at the end without working up too much of a sweat mashing the wrong gears.
