Just wondering if this is a common problem. I rode my Dahon Vitesse P18 yesterday and when folding, the chain falls off quite liberally. How can you prevent this?

I also have a Novara Flyby which is made by Dahon and it doesn't have this problem. Plus it has a chainguard, which I'm wondering if that's a good solution. Been trying to find one online but not able to. Anyone know where I can get one that fits correctly?

It says on the website: "Chain features a continuous enclosure to keep clothing protected from grease and road grime".

The chain on my Dahon occasionally falls off during the folding process....maybe 1 time in 50. Not such a big deal- I just put it back on with a napkin.

It might have to do with what gear the chain is on when you fold it. Try something different and see what happens.

I added a chain Minder onto the seat tube that almost touches the chain on the inside Disc Chainguard on the crank,

+ a DIY piece that is sitting on either side of the 1 cog in back to keep it from coming off there,

since the chain would come off occasionally , backpedaling to oil the chain and just occasionally from rough handling

But this is a Bike friday Pocket Llama with an IGH and a Chain tensioner.

I think a fold in half bike like DaHon can take a plastic chain guard But they predominantly are for bigger wheel bikes

and not small so the chainring size capacity is limited ..


(BMX, Bikes seem to ship with plastic chain-guards, We never use them as they would just be removed anyhow by the kids, and they go ewww at seeing one on there..)

Chains falling off during transit (not riding) is fairly common on derailleur bikes. It can happen if the bike is laying flat and the crank backpedals a partial turn, or simply from bumping. Shifting to larger sprockets can help by increasing chain tension, or if this is a major issue, you use some of the devices that mtn bikers use, but your options are limited if you have multiple chainrings.

If shifting doesn't help, the simplest thing would be to improvise a strap or clip of some kind and attach the chain to the bottom of the ring so it can't move or fall off. A cut down toe strap would work, or if you can find one, something like one of these ball and loop bungees might be quick and easy to use.

I use one to when carrying the bike in the car trunk with wheels off, and when shipping. I don't attach to the chainring, I pull up slack and attach to the right chainstay.

well the wonders of modding the bike, meaning putting other stuff on it....
There is no problem with the regular setup on that bike ... The front derrailleur will take care of the chain not dropping off the front. Maybe an easy answer is to have it adjusted right ... there is a low and high adjuster screw on it ...

as full chainguard. that obviously will not work on a derailleur bike

Not universally true , but EU spec Bikes are not shipped to the USA so uncommon to see a bike sold with one on It.

I have a SKS chainboard here, but max teeth count is 44 or similar. it just doesnt fit over our 53 plus ones.
same with many other chainguards.. from Hebie or or or ... they are all made for 26 inchers or 27/28 700 c equipped touring or city bikes as they call them over there, and all of them have much smaller front chainrings...

Now if he wants to go down to a 44 teet in the front.. it might work :-(

9t BMX freehub wheel in the back? the BMX bikes come with a pretty small chainring on their crank
so bumping up to 48t should be plenty High .. 5,33:1_ 44 is 4,88:1

I think your Novara Flyby has an internal hub gear. Correct? My experience has been that derailleur bikes throw their chains more frequently than bikes without a chain tensioner.

I replaced my 3/32" (bushingless) derailleur chain with a older style, full bushing ,
[Bushings fullwidth so not as side-flexible, taller side plate , pins not flush, but, longer, extend above the side-plates.]

and it stays on better..

I'd check the front derailleur's limit screws first,if memory serves,this bike was modded,right? Good chance the previous owner didn't have things dialed in right. Also an outside chance the chain is too long.
