Rim sizes 101?

When I left biking years ago, there was 27" and 700c rims. Mountain bikes was just coming into existence and I think they were more 26+ inches if I remember.

Fast forward, and now I see folding bikes with 12, 14, 16, 20, 24 inch rims and even larger. A bit confused.

Is there a basic primer online about different rims?

Which sizes have a good choice of rims and tires to build wheels around? Which doesn't and one is stuck with heavier rims? My guess is that 20" offers the most choices in high performance rims/tires/rims. Would I be right? But what about smaller ones like 12, 14 and 16?

Thanks in advance for any help in understanding this new universe of rims.

Sheldon Brown's Tire Sizing Systems web page is a good reference for rim/tire sizing.

2_20" and 2_16" & in each category

It's ~ Bigger tire on a smaller rim, and bigger rim fitted with thinner, High pressure.. Go fast tires 349/451.
