Very interesting. I can see the US Gov't shutting this down fast!

URL invalid?

How do you get google maps to "reveal" area 51?

OK I suck at this. Try:

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=22558

It shows satelite images of area 51 with some interesting structures.

Uhm, pictures of the Groom Lake area have been around since the late 60s, and more recent higher-res images were taken in the late 90s by the Ikonos satellite.
These images have not been restricted in any way, suggesting it's not a big deal anymore. Any secret hardware will be indoors anyway when low-orbit satellites are overhead.

Go here for good pics and resources:

Here's a question: Why doesn't Google put a scale bar on their maps and satellite images?

If the images are the latest Ikonos ones, they're 1 m/pixel.
I.e, if one image is 1000x1000 pixels, it covers an area of 1x1 km (1 km^2).

Right, but some of the "satellite" imagery is at varying resolution.

I would think that a scalebar is a standard on maps.

Ok, I just had a look myself.
The images are quite low-res and heavily compressed (ugly edges).

wow, some areas have some sweet satellite quality. I just looked at my uncles yard in California from here. Looked at the beach where I first kissed my wife in La Jolla. Looked at my dad's farm in Kentucky and looked at the switchbacks I rode on a tour in the Sedona, AZ region. Too fun. How have I been unaware of this tool for so long?

This is Area 51, some of those craters seem to be from underground nuclear weapons tests: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=groom+...0678&t=k&hl=en

If you look closely, here are 2 SR-71 blackbirds, badass. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=CA+935...039&t=k&hl=en/

I spy two SR-71 Blackbirds, long range bomber x5, crapload of cars, fighter jet x25, heilcopters x22, 2 spy planes, and multiple objects that I can't make out.

Some people say there's what looks like two F-22 raptors parked southwest of the blackbirds.
I'd wet myself if I drove into that facility by accident... that is if I made it in at all.

For something really cool... go north-west, look for the hi-def area of the same color. Find the MASSIVE oval, center and zoom in... What's that, a sceret GM test track? Not a raceway as there's no grandstand.

Uhm, that's Edwards AFB, not Groom Lake...

And the great oval seems to be a test track.
There's even what looks like a motocross sand track with series of jumps inside the oval, just north of the "admin area" outside.

My guess is it's this:
http://www.death-valley.us/article366.html
If that's the case, then the satellite images must be quite recent!

Fairchild AFB, outside Spokane, WA.
Plenty of B-52s visible.

No, that's not groom lake. The first link is groom lake.
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=groom+...0678&t=k&hl=en

Hence why it says "Groom+lake,nv" right there in the link.

You can't even get close enought to consider it an accident. The fences are so far out all you see is vehicles and scary well armed guys if you're near the fence lines. Flew by the area on the Harley a few years back. Didn't even think about stopping. Mostly you'll see what look to be regular fencing with Government property signs on them. We did have two planes come over the mountains and run parrellel with the highway for a while but that's common all through Nevada, Utah and Arizona anyway. Unless you're dumb enough to get near the fence. Things (cameras?) start moving and you may get a visit. We only stopped in the little crappy towns near by to gas up the Hogs. I'd give me right arm (OK maybe left) to get a full hands on tour of that place. That would be my only incentive to run for President someday.

Edwards AFB doesn't seem to be that secret.
A friend of mine in Colorado got a short tour of some facilities late last year.
And he's just an ordinary guy in his early 20s.
I think he got to know someone there when he was looking for info regarding the XB-70 project.
