    "Service" Providers

You just have to watch "service" companies with which you do business every minute!
I discussed my monthly bill with my satellite TV provider, and the guy offered me 3 months of premium movie channels for free.
    So, I took it.
    Free??.....HA !!
What he failed to disclose was that the "free" period did not start for 3 weeks hence.
Sooooooooooooooo, when I got my bill, it was $25.00 or so higher!
When I called, the lady said that I had been charged for about 3 weeks of the movie channels,
as the "free" period did not begin til the first of the month.
    My one-word response was: "WRONG!"

So, she ultimately adjusted my bill, and all is right with the world, at least for now.

    Some "service."
    Sneaky buggers...........

Cable companies and cell phone companies seem to be at the top of the "service" list for gotchas... they try everything short of murder. Would love to see some sweeping change in the way they do business... something that would require full disclosure and real competition (at the cable level).

I hate all the hidden fees too.

My favorite is the: premium channel(s) are free for one month promo followed by the "we'll call you at the end of the month to see if you want to keep them" lie.

Despite my warning, my wife fell for this. Then got some c/s rep in india who hung up on her.

My mom used to work fro MCI in the early days. The running joke was: MCI, making communication impossible.

Free tv is the best tv! My wife and i in 10 years have had cable for 6 months when we lived in an apartment. Sure their are times when i wish we could watch certain movies, sports, shows but really dont miss it at all. We have a 2 yr old and a 5 yr old and they love watching cartoons on Iowa Public Television. Glad i dont have to pay another bill and deal with customer service.

There's a big part of me that wants to just cut the cable and get rid of cable as they keep raising our rates all the flipping time (almost doubled in ~ 2 years after the local provider got bought out by Time Warner). The problem is, the local phone lines are not good so the only reliable phone/internet is through the cable company. Otherwise, getting rid of cable and spending some of that on netflix and hulu plus instead would seem like a good way to go. Yes, I'd miss sports, especially right now when I have a teething 6 month old and I like being able to drop into a random game of whatever at midnight for a half hour and then turn it off and go back to bed once I get him to sleep, but I really hate those cable guys.

We have Charter. When I recently said to a friend, "I hate Charter." He replied, "Who doesn't?" That about sums it up.

My favorite "service" request is from Keyspan, my natural gas supplier.

They send on a monthly basis a notice that I don't have coverage for the gas lines internal to the house.

I've used natural gas for close to 40 years in 3 locations and for the first 30 never knew that this could potentially become an issue.

Funny thing is if the house blows up due to an internal gas leak, my homeowners coverage kicks in, not the gas line pipe coverage.

Any scam to make a dime.

That depends. These days I can get 3 channels from one local station. The available programming is so dreadful that I don't even turn on the TV anymore. I watch YouTube instead.

I used to have decent reception before TV went digital. Then my reception became very seasonal, decent in summer, down to the three channels in winter. But in recent years the signals never improved. I'm not entirely sure why. I get the 3 signals from a transmitter that's located southeast of me. All the other stations locally are on a hilltop to the west of me. My apartment is on the side of a steep hill. So I think I'm in a shadow. I can't run an antenna up from my roof because it's not my roof, but I've gotten amplified rabbit ears placed near my ceiling.

But actually, the programming is better with YouTube, and any show is always available so there is no time constraint.

My gas and water/sewer companies have tried a variation on this. They've sent notices saying that as of 18 months ago they're no longer responsible for anything that happens in the pipes between the street and the house. Nice of them to unilaterally make that decision. Then they try to sell insurance for those stretches to makeup the difference.

Aren't Huge Monopoly Corporations just the Most caring things out there ?

I went from a Phone DSL Deal to the 3 service Bundle with Charter ,

primarily because the new one was only $25 more than the Phone deal with all the taxes and ISP charges added Up.
And the cable company has a brick & mortar office Here, so I just ride My Bike a couple Miles and talk to them in person when needed.

AT&T did this years ago after the "phone company deregulation." They used to claim and service right up to the phone, but as soon as the dereg went in, everything from the box on the side of the house onto inside to the actual phone became YOUR responsibility. You want any of that fixed, it will cost you.

This is actually pretty standard in the utility business. I work for a water utility and anything beyond the owners side of the curb valve is their responsibility. Sewer is all the way to the main, electric and gas to the meter

I'm able to just have cable internet without the TV

Oh, I didn't know that was standard. It used to be here they were responsible for it all the way up to the meter (which is on the outside of the house).

This is how it is locally, gas company responsibility ends at the meter, which is on the house. Water company is to where the house pipe meets the street main. I had to fix the pipe leak out at the main junction in the street one time, cost me $1500.
