    Painful bug attacks ...

My wife and I were stung multiple times today after accidentally disturbing a wasp nest hidden under our deck. We were removing the trellising so we could access a gas line underneath. Needless to say ... it was painful. I got one directly on the lower lip, swelling it up for a few hours.

So I got to thinking that there must be nastier bug attacks that people have experienced. What's the worst bug attack / pain you've ever experienced? ... and where did it happen?

Never more than a sting from a single bug.

You didn't see the buggers flying around?

A schoolmate of mine kept bees. His favorite joke was he has never been bitten by a bee (as far as he knew) but he was stung many times.

I stumbled into a yellow jacket hive a few years ago. There were some bees in a garden barrow next to the side door on my house. I lifted a booklet laying on it and the yellow jackets shot up in a column then swarmed me like a fat family at a free buffet.

I got about 20 stings on me. A bunch of stings on my left arm, a few on my right arm, one on my left ear, two or three on my left foot, one pretty much in my left armpit (that one must have happened while I was flailing), a couple on my right shoulder and one on my right upper butt cheek. I ran down the street past 4 houses before they stopped chasing me. I was wearing corduroys and there must have been 30 bees fighting to get though them (one did). There was also a bunch in my hair which was kinda unruly since I had drove home with the windows down. That was gross pulling bees from my hair.

I wonder what people driving by thought when they saw me hightailing down the street jumping up and down waving my arms about. "Hey honey, you should have seen what I saw on they way home!"

The first night they hurt all night, but they itched for weeks.

We never noticed them congregating under our deck. Not sure why, there were hundreds of them in the nest.

That's way worse than my story. I only got stung 4 times. The worst was on my lower lip. It was numb and swollen all day.

A few years back my dog came to the door covered in bees. I started slapping them off of her and the hive attacked me. Got stung about 20 times. Benadryl for the both of us and we were fine.

Not particularly painful, but dead on... was arriving near home one day, was just blocks away when a bee got me dead center in the chest. I had on a bright yellow and orange jersey zipped open, and the darn thing went dead center. I felt it hit and brushed my hand down and swept the bee away. But right in the center of my chest, where that breast bone is, was the stinger, sitting there throbbing. Pulled it out when I got home just a minute later.

Would have been real annoying to have that happen while in heavy traffic. It was certainly startling.

I am allergic to bedbugs... got bitten at the shop where a homeless guy had left his bags (and bugs) and had to be on IV antibiotics and antihistamines for a week.

Ugh. Wasp-on-lips has happened to me twice while cycling. Like being punched with the flat of somebody's hand.

I've had a yellow jacket sting me on the upper eyelid, wound up looking like a loosing prize fighter. Had a guinea wasp sting me between the eyes, that sucked. But for all out pain nothing tops the red "cow ants" we have around here. Picture a fuzzy red wingless hornet with a stinger at least a half inch long. Stings that draw blood.

I got stuck in the marsh in a canoe when I mis-judged how quick the tide was going out. For about three hours I was the main course to the most viscous swarm of sandgnats. I prayed for death.

Funny you should ask. I collided with a wasp near the start of a metric century yesterday and it stung me on the cheek. It hurt like crazy but I kept riding. This morning, my face was all I swelled up on that side of my face. I might better go by the pharmacy and see if there's anything I should do fo it.

i have been stung numerous times by wasps, hornets and Yellowjackets. The worst was when I accidentally disturbed a large hornet nest while working in the yard, and a cloud of them chased me down the street. I was lucky to get by with about 8 stings that time. Another time I was backpacking in the mountains when I noticed a stream of black Yellowjackets streaming out of a hole in the ground in front of me. The trail ran beside a large waterfall and my options were to keep going or go over the edge into the gorge. A bunch of Yellowjackets flew up my pants and under my shirt, and I had to strip down very quickly when we got to some rocks crossing the river. There were people all over the rocks, but I had no choice. I got stung numerous times, so many I lost count.

i could go on, but those were the worst.

Oh I think I got a spider bite one time. Jeeze this was like 30 years ago or so. Something bit me on my heel, and over the next few days it blistered up to be the size of a half dollar coin, with the skin around sort of a strained white, while the blister itself was a deep purple. It took weeks to heel.

I've heard this and the neck from several motorcyclists. I'd much rather take it in the neck.

It was all I could do to brake and find my way to the side of the road and then picked the little bastard out of my faceguard... he was still wiggling.

The next day I looked like someone had hit me in the face with a baseball bat.

I almost inhaled a bee once. I coughed or spit it out then saw the stripes. A throat sting could have been fatal, so that's a bullet I dodged.

If you get bitten by a bedbug, and are not as allergic as SixtyFiver, the best anti-itch treatment is hot water. Not warm, but a bit hotter than you'd usually tolerate. I do it at about 120 degrees F. Scratching doesn't work. But hot water will provide relief.

Long ago, I was riding an old Honda Dream I had, through the other side of town. Suddenly my right upper arm started burning. I thought someone threw out a lit cigarette and it hit me. I looked down and there was the biggest hornet I ever saw jabbing his stinger into my arm, over and over. That bad bog was almost a big as my thumb.

I knocked him off and pulled into a Wendy's parking lot. I already had a huge welt, and so I went inside asking for a small cup of ice to put on it. The girl refused to give me a cup of ice without a purchase. I showed her the sting and asked for the manager. She finally gave me a small cup of ice.

I grabbed bed the cup in my teeth, started the Honda, and got moving. I then rode home one handed, shifting without clutching, holding the ice cup over the wound with my left hand. I made it all the way across town without having to come to a full stop.

I still till have a pock mark where Joe hornet stung me. This was about 1978.

Heat will break down the foreign proteins that we react too... I carry a Bic and will light that up until it is hot and then press it to mosquito bites which I also react badly to.

Cold packs will stop the itching because of a different reason, itching and cold rely on the same nerve receptors and the cold is a more powerful stimulus.

My wife lived under cold packs when she had an allergic reaction to stitches... since the stitches were under the skin this almost drove her insane unless she had the cold pack.

While golfing last year i had a beer in the cart that i had just opened. I went and tee'd of and started driving down the fairway and took a sip. A Hornet stung me in the tongue and I tried spitting him out. I pitched the beer out and I could not get rid of the thing...so I decided I could not drive the cart and get rid of the Hornet at the same time...bailed from the cart at full speed. My friend sitting next to me wondering why I was freaking out got the cart under control and drove back to me sitting on the grass with the dead Hornet in my hand that I munched up while rolling to a stop in the grass. Dang thing got my tongue, cheek, and lip before I accidently chewed him up. I played the last 2 holes and went home. Man I swelled up pretty good but i looked like somthing from a horror show for about 3 hours. My friends still tell the story in tournaments when out of towners are playing with us...i can laugh now. I now keep a towel over my beverage when not in my grasp!

I'm sorry, but that sounds like it would have been a riot to watch.
