    Body Odor.

So yesterday I'm working at the desk with this lady. She's about my age- she used to be pretty good looking...

As I'm kneeling next to her, I smell BO. She stank. I couldn't say "eww... I'm not working near you, you stink!"

I kept my composure and finished what I needed to do (and she kept making me come back over to her desk- she had to notice I kept backing away).

When I got back to my office- I smelled that BO everywhere- it was in my nostrils... and wouldn't go away.

I went to bed a little early last night- put on a fresh t-shirt before...

This morning I get up, I'm sitting at the computer and... I smell BO. On my shirt that I slept in. It's still in my nostrils... ARGGGH!!!

You need to snort some coke. That gets the smell out.

Can't you make meth into a snorting stuff... Nothing like huffing or snorting drain cleaner.

I just avoid being in close proximity to people with poor hygiene and people whose breath smells like a dirty ashtray. Life's too short to put up with that assault on the senses.

Not to defend people who constantly seem to be at odds with body cleanliness, but bear in mind that at times we all go through little cycles that perhaps our favorite deodorant or mouthwash can't handle. It may be due to some bad body chemistry (such as "wrong time of the month") or something you ate or other personal stress.

Because I bike, my regular sweat isn't too bad, but nervous sweat on the other hand, can be quite overwhelming...

Could it be she is calling you over because she doesn't understand this aspect of her job and she is quite nervous about it?

It's not a hygiene issue. Its a health issue. Odds on the poor lady has a serious Candida Albans infection (yeast/fungal) and despite the fact that her symptoms are obvious (as you have found out), Doctors have failed to help her.

If you can still smell it, try rinsing your nose with a saline solution. You will react to the saline a little but its worth it (don't make the saline too strong). If this doesn't work you can try a vinegar solution (not too strong).

Not a good idea. The carbonation really messes with your nostrils. . . . .

Regarding the saline... you can buy that over the counter in a nice balanced mix ready to go... it's called Ocean. It is also sterile... vice whatever you might make at home.

I've never really known anyone to have bad BO. The occasional whiff I've gotten I just attribute to the person forgetting deodorant, ate something that didn't agree with them, or having a particularly stressful day. The only thing that irritates me about some people is close talking. Even if you're hygienic, don't smoke, etc, I don't want to smell your breath.

There are certain people whose natural smell I find extremely pungent and offensive. Not sweat or hygiene issues, not personal care products like perfume, and not breath. Just...them. Not their fault, but I do stand a bit further back around such people. And I don't think most people smell what I smell, or at least they don't show it. Not like sweat that anybody would say smells bad. I think it's just a personal biological...reaction...to certain people's unique chemistry.

One of the reasons I stopped being a manager was because as part of the job, I had to counsel people about "cleanliness", in particular body odor (regardless of the cause). It does amaze me that people don't understand such smells are offensive to others but I have learned that people who don't understand... well, never will. It's not their problem, unfortunately it's everyone elses. Talk to management to see if they can take action otherwise, invest in a small air purifier... they work wonders.

BTW I rather smell BO on someone than cigarette smoke or garlic oozing from pores... ugh!

And.... people around strong smells eventually do not smell it anymore. They don't even realize they stink.

Try working in a library sometime! Many terrible smelling guests who just need a place to be.

There are some good tips on how to deal with a smelly co-worker here:

Can also be a problem when the stinky person is management. Read "Steve Jobs" by Walter Isaacson for more info.

One of my dearest employees was a woman who also smoke and drank coffee all day long. She would come by my desk to discuss a problem and her breathe pretty much made me gag. But I just sat there waiting for her to finish and walk away. Because of her, I stopped drinking coffee. If it made her breathe that bad, I suppose it made mine stinky as well.

I get that Jobs was probably so obessed with work his cleanliness was not a priority... I think many of us are too preoccupied with being clean (I know I am) and probably alittle stink is good... at least it keeps people away and stops them from bugging you (which may be why Jobs stunk... he didn't want to be bothered).

I'm usually more offended by product used to cover or mask human odors than actual human odors.
I know next to nothing. I am frequently wrong.
