cat grabbed a juvenile Ladder-backed woodpecker?
? I grabbed the cat.
The bird was in pretty good condition, no wing damage or deep punctures.

Really cute bird, little fear, even perched on my finger (wouldn't let GO of my finger!) was pecking me -a good sign. It was tapping outside but the adult birds were gone so no easy release.

Anyway the real wild animal rehab is a 35 min drive up island -I'd have to get gas for my car...naw...so I phoned the S.P.C.A and they said if I could get it to the central animal hospital, THEY would see to transporting it to the wildlife refuge.

Cool!, the central hospital is a 15-20 minute ride.....so I put a big soup pot-no lid in my cycling pack and put the bird in an zipped up -and off I ride!

So this little bird jumps up on the lip of this pot inside my knapsack -And starts pecking the inside of the knapsack -right on my back! HARD!
I knew he was o.k BECAUSE he was tapping, If he'd stopped, I'd have to stop riding and make sure he didn't fall out of the pot\ down the inside of the pack and get squishy-d.

So I'm @ the vet, standing at the counter, my packs on a chair with the bird tapping on the pot.
The other pet owners are looking at the pack -at each other...? Tap! Tap! TAP!

Fiesty little guy, nipping me from a little opening in the zipper.

It was SOOOOOOO cute! I missed my sun ride, but I got in a real feel good ride anyway.

I think it was a ladder back woodpecker anyway..looks kinda like this but smaller and cuter.

way cool.
wish more people would do stuff like this.
The only birds I see here are
either grackles, Red wing blackbirds, starlings or red tailed hawks.

Good job, you deserve a cold one.

I think I've only had one chance to do a good deed and that was last year when I returned a lady's xrays that I found.
Today, I became an accidental bike messenger.

Housemates cat -slipped off the collar with bell.
Maybe not my fault, but I felt I was to take the responsibility to get it to the refuge somehow.
We did some good speed on the road..I was thinking 'bird..we are really flying now!'

Cats are o.k..but this one has been fixed so the hunting\trap is misguided instinct to teach her kittens to hunt.
Sad..but she doesn't really hurt them....well, this time.

Bell your cats? ..If you have bird feeders anyway.

It was SUCH a neat little animal, having a little red headed woodpecker stuck on your finger
(i'm gently shaking my hand to get it to jump off -NO WAY!) was sooo cool.

The refuge has other 'peckers so all should be well w\ the little fellow. =I think he got a checkup at the top vet clinic in town.
Free!

Really neat "feel good" story...thanks for sharing!!

I once rescued a little squirl from a cat when I was 8. I took it home and stayed up all night with it, and even tried to feed it with a little syringe. Eventually I fell asleep and the poor little squirl didn't make it through the night. Tough lesson for a 8 year old.

Hello Jeff,

I picked up the bird from Central Vet last night after a meeting in town last night, but unfortunately the woodpecker died overnight.

Thank you for your concern for this bird.

Good on you Jeff.

I remember the day I spotted a kitten on the side of the highway on my 900cc motor bike. I stopped got off and walked to her. She jumped in to my arms. I was like crap this little one needs help. I tucked the little one down my leather jacket. (she scratch the hell out of me, on the ride home) I took her home for the night and fed her milk and chopped up potatoes. The next day off to the L.C.P.A. shelter. She was such a cute cat. I hope she found a good home.
