TTY or phones for the hearing impaired ?

My Dad is hard of hearing, almost 100%. Mainly due to being a small arms technician during Korea, according to the VA doctor. He can no longer hear me on the phone.

Iíve been researching TTY phones and it appears he would need internet service which he does not have but which I could arrange.

The phones have mixed reviews, the main complaint is that the voice-to-text translation is slow. And it looks like a TTY phone is needed on both ends, which would restrict who can call him and use the captioning feature. And most of his friends and family speak mostly Spanish. My Dad can speak perfect English and Spanish.

Was wondering if anyone has had experience with TTY phones or devices and if you would share information and recommendations.

I write him letters which he greatly enjoys, but not as often as I should.

Thank you.

We used a CapTel phone for my wife's mother in the later stages of her life. It did require internet (though basic DSL was fine). It did NOT require both ends to have a TTY phone, there is a transcriber involved who types the other end's words.

See What is CapTel? Captioned Telephone

I think many/most states have some sort of program with them.
