Cigarette smoking riders

I can take a guess and say that most bikers dont smoke. But who does and how much? I used to smoke around a pack a day, but I started riding and now its cut down to a half a pack. Anyone else?

I smoked a pack a day then started riding. Made it impossible to smoke. Stopped riding a couple years later; started smoking again. Started riding again, immediately stopped smoking again--was impossible to do both.

There's a guy that I see every once and a while riding around who smokes cigars while biking. Everytime I've seen him, he's had a lit cigar in his mouth.

I smoke between 1&2 packs of cigarettes per day (guess which brand). I smoke less while on active holiday trekking/hiking/cycle touring. Excluding events&holiday, I cycle about 150 miles/week.

Gave the smokes up about 7 months ago. I smoked 25 a day. I don't really miss it much, except occassionally after dinner or when having a beer.

Worst thing was when I had a race after a looong break 4 years ago. Mates would be warming up, I'd be having a smoke!

I always see people at the rest stops on charity rides lighting up. Seems kind of pointless.

Red Box!?

I smoked Marlboro reds like nobody's business. Then I got a really good chest cold / bronchitis thing and just couldn't take a drag. So I quit, but I didn't "quit", I just stopped. Eight years and no problems, but I still think about it when gigging and man, sometimes when you're bored you really miss it.

Yeah, I smoke hand rolls, often while I'm riding. I need to stop that...

After 20+ yrs of smoking, I gave it up a month ago. While I do miss it sometimes, I have noticed I'm not as short of breath as I used to be while climbing.

Quitting isn't that hard so long as you really want to do it...

This is the critical point! I've attempted a couple times over the past 5 years (been smoking heavily for 18 years)-and they've all been half arsed attempts on my part. It was really "cool" when I was using the patch, chewing the gum, taking zyband (low dose prescription welbutrin), and still would lite up-really good for my ticker. I'm wicked smart .

I'll give it another go when I can be "serious" about it.

Currently, allowing smoking at the Medical Center where I work is being phased out. Ironically, one of the remaining designated smoking areas is at one of the large bike racks !

I assume you're talking about cigarettes, in that case only noobs smoke cigarettes. There are much less harmful stuff to smoke than cigarettes, and they're better too...!

Never smoked cigarettes - they smell bad to me. I do smoke a pipe a couple times per week, and we pull out the hookah once or twice per month.

It really is true. I quit cold turkey and although the first few days were hell, determination not to smoke and repeating to myself that I was NOT a smoker helped. As did looking at my 2 yr old son

Good luck and once you're ready it'll be a piece of cake

I have smoked since I was 15yrs old, I'm now 42 (43 next month) I have tried to quit and after I fail,
I smoke even more. (Its a mental thing I know) It is a goal to be smoke free.
My cigarettes are definately a crutch, they got me through to sobriety(13 years)

I've killed myself going up a hill, be it road or dirt and upon reaching the top(once I caught my breath)
lit up. Yeah, how ******** is that. They stink, they are expensive, and I can't breath, go figure.

Never smoked, never will. I've never known anyone who smokes and bikes, except for potheads.

Nope-******** is when I where my '01 Tour d' France polka dot jersey (copy) on a fitness ride[one of my favorite+best fitting ones]. I'll stop on climbs for a smoke break. eww

I've also smoked WHILE CLIMBING, on my loaded bike on tour. Rare, but I've done it-usually on climbs of a few miles where I'm spinning at 5MPH or less. Really ********-not noticing an ash dropped untill it burned through my shorts+cycle shorts underneath (I kept thinking I smelled something burning-oh wait, I am...).

Nah. ******** is when you flick away a half-finished cig because you're in a hurry to start your next ride.

That's tobacco abuse!
