My 4th grader suspended!

Yesterday I received a phone call from my son's school. He is in the 4th grade. I picked up just as the aswering machine got it. They had already hung up but I could tell by the caller ID that it was the school. Since I was expecting a call from the counselor regarding a GT (gifted and talented) testing issue I called her back and left her a message.
About twenty minutes later my wife called me and said she just got off a 20 minute phone call from the school principal saying our son was very close to being suspended for the rest of the school year. He had been to see the principal the day before about behavior issues (he never mentioned it to us) and it had gotten worse that day. The principal was getting nowhere with him and then made the call home. My wife then talked to him on the phone and he sounded kind of strange and upset. He was making excuses about why he was acting up and said he didn't get enough sleep the night before because the band concert. My other son had a band concert and we didn't get home until late. As my wife is explaining this to me we are discussing how to handle it when he gets home in about 30 minutes. We have had a few behavior problems before but nothing major.

About 10 minutes before he is to get home my wife calls back and says that he is suspended for the rest of the year. The principal gave him a note to take home and he refused to take it and then tore it up in front of her. At some point during the discussion with the principal my wife had mentioned something about the GT test. She also mentioned that all of his teachers had said he was a pleasure to have in their class and that this was unusual behavior for him. At some point it didn't add up and the principal realized that this was not our son in her office. She had called the wrong parents. My wife even talked to this other kid and didn't realize it wasn't our son. She said he just sounded upset and noncomunicative.

If this had not been cleared up before my son made it home and I brought it up with him and he of course denied everything. I can't imagine how much trouble he would have been in. The principal was very appologetic about the mixup and would look into how it happened. Hopefully we will get more deatails today. I just had to share my hour of changing emotions.

You let these folks "teach" you kids. I think I now understand home schooling.

Let's give the adults running the school a break here.

The kid probably gave the principal your son's name just to buy time. This is fairly common. It happended to me once when I was in grade school.

That must be a really big school for the principal to not know the kid's name. I don't know a lot about schools, but when I went to school, the principal knew my name. My nephews go to a decent sized school now, and the principal knows their names.

I mean, what would happen (God forbid) in case of a catastrophe or emergency? The principal won't have time to go running down class lists to figure out what kid needs the help.

It's actually a brand new school and the principals first year too. It's K-5 and I think there are only 800 kids which is about 500 less than last years over crowded school. I'm not upset with the school. Mistakes happen. It was just too bizarre. My wife talked to the kid and didn't recognize that it wasn't our son. The lack of sleep excuse because of a band concert matched with up with our evening. Our son was very quiet at the concert that night making us think it could have been him in trouble the previous day. Just to many things that fit too perfectly. We have not found out if the other kid gave my son's name or if it was just a mixup in names. THe principal mentioned a couple of teacher names that the kid had been having problem s with and my wife didn't recognize the names. That should have been a clue but she just thought that they may have been some of the elective teachers like music, art or computers. After he got home we looked up the teacher names and it appears to have been a 3rd grader.

man, talk about a close one.

Gotta laugh a bit though, I could imagine what a rump the principal felt like.

400 kids with 7 digit phone numbers = 2800 numbers. The principal or consuler made a mistake looking up the number. Bet the kid who was suspened is alphabeticly before or after your child.

Please don't take this wrongly. Are you involved in the school where your child attends? The principal at my children's school knows me by name and my children by name probably because I volunteer for various activities and my wife serves on the PTO. The principal and I even discuss bicycling (he had his bicycle stolen not too long ago).

At least introduce yourself to the principal and meet some teachers and get to know the custodians by name. Say hello everytime when you see them and reintroduce yourself a few times.

I don't know about other schools, but our student files had our picture on the inside.

1. The principal owes you an apology.

2. If you ever doubted the competency level of the school, well, now you know.

I have a few 4th graders I would like to suspend!

Bigger school, honest mistake I guess. But I would sure raise some hell about it so that maybe it will not happen again to someone else!

Brand new school and principal's first year...says a lot to me. Sounds like the principal is making an example of your child. "See kiddos...this is why we don't challenge the principal (or rip up notes, or misbehave etc)" Just a thought!
