I've got a 10 page paper due....

about the election of 1860 (USA). well the rough draft is due friday and ive got 1.5 pages done. I dont feel like doing it and he only checks them over real quick so it seems like a waste. Argh , and i dont wanna do it. Sophomores should not be stuck with such menial work . Im considering being a bad person and finding some article about bicycle aerodyanmics and lathe works and copying them into there to take up 6 pages. Then conclude with 1860 stuff

hmm...start typing. I didn't feel like doing my papers, but I did them. Like my 35 page philosophy dissertation. Or my in-class, 6 book, dual essay exam. Without building a solid foundation in communicative writing, regardless of assigned length, life will be very difficult.

10 pages? That shouldn't take much more than a day if you've done the reading.

Cut-n-paste and you'll likely get what you deserve....

I can understand how you feel, knowing that all the work you put into it problaby will be scanned over in 15min. It happend to me a few years ago, 2 friends and I worked forever on some project. Handed it in, and then we saw the teacher the next day and he said he didn't have time to look though it and he gave us an averaged mark (C+). I was sooooo pi**ed off and thought we had wasted all that time we put into it.

But now I think that we still benifited from the project anyway, and that him not reading it didn't affect what we learnt...

Don't plagarize.

Here:

Increase margins to 1.15" vs. 1"
Increase font to 12.5 from 12.
Increase spacing to 2.2 from double.
Increase the gap between letters from standard to 1.1.
Do a search and replace and replace every space after the period ". " with two spaces ". ".

Well im taking Honors level classes here, its great because it counts as +1 for your GPA. Even with two C's i still pulled off a 3.5 . I go to dover high school. As for this paper, this is for American History/gov. I, and my senior year i take the second year of AMH&G. The school is also a vocational/technical school so thats what im interested in, next year i get to spend 2-3 hours a day in the shop per day for a grade

and again, i wont actually copy anything. I would write about 1860 in that happy year for maybe 4 pages, then the next 4 pages i would write about something else which i can juist go on a rant for and i find more interesting, and then for the final 2 or 3 pages its back to 1860 . Its a rough draft so he doesnt read it, he just looks its over and says "the formats right, 100 for you"

I had ten page papers as a freshmen in HS. I got to the point that I could bust out a 3-4 pager in about 45 minutes. (one class period, usually directly before it was due ) Just get it done, it will help later.

That election was also one of the more interesting ones in the last century.

Somehow my brain seems to be able to spout a bunch of crap that looks really good on paper, but doesn't really say anything. Typing a paper(rather than handwriting), at the last minute(of course), is SOP. All A's, baby! Give the teacher/professor what they want and you'll get the grade, dude.

ah, that brings me back. Here are a couple more tips along those lines:

make any titles or section headings a large typesize with plenty of space above and below. adding footnotes is a good way to cite source material (i.e. stuff you didn't write) - it takes up space and makes you look smart for using them in the first place.

djbrod is right. You've got a ton of material to work w/here. First of all, there were 4 candidates. Even a quick bio on the three who lost should take up some space. And the other candidate was, oh yeah, Lincoln. Lots to talk about there. And the aftermath of the election was a bit more important than w/most elections. 10 pages should be no problem, even w/o messing w/the margins (not that it's not occasionally useful to do that).

OK, geek moment over. Good luck.

Lincoln won. Hope that helps you.

I agree! Learning how to suck it up, power through, and do things you don't want to do is a great skill that carries over into all sorts of aspects of life. Plus that's such an interesting time in history--you may end up learning a lot from writing the paper; then you'll really be the life of every party as you spew out historical tidbits and make droll commentary! Your high school sounds awesome, by the way.

Dude, there's a lot about the election of 1860 you could rant on about. Darwinism was new, science was exploding in new directions - particularly challenging long-held religious beliefs. How all this impacted the citizen's thoughts on that pesky little issue of slavery/abolition is certainly an interesting avenue to explore. And, by the way, how on earth did some gangly freak from Illinois (barely out of Illinois Territory, remember) become the President? And with your machining interests, why not look up the history of interchangable parts & how that impacted the next couple years of war (and of course, how the election impacted that technology).

As for the interchangable parts, thats probably not going to be until senior year because thats when im taking American History 2. Thanks vor all of the suggestions here, i was already planning to go into a page each or so of a biography for each major candidate, so far i have 3 done. I might go into a page and a half for lincon for obvious reasons but this isnt a biography paper so i cant do more than that, io need to talk about debates now....time to start researching. Im such a procrastinator
