Searching the forums question

Is there anyway to make the search do a phrase-only search?

e.g. I want to search the phrase "single speed" and I don't want any threads that have just the term 'single' or 'speed'.

TIA

have you considered searching just in the SS forum or something?

Single Speed was just an example I thought of. What I'm really interested in doing is searching stuff like "Allez Comp" in the Road Cycling forum and I don't want all the threads that have just Allez or Comp.

enclose it in quotes.
I.e search
"Single speed"
to get that exact sentence.

This also returns posts with "Single" and "Speed". I want posts with only the phrase "Single Speed".

Sorry, google works that way.

Doing a search for all posts with single speed is going to produce a large span of posts. I didn't see any posts (btw) that were only "single" or "speed" when I did the search.

I repeated the search doing a search for all THREADS the next time, and I ended up with only threads with the "single speed". I am not sure what you're doing when you do the search, but repeat it with the words in quotes. Do it for your "Allez Comp" this time and see what happens.

Whenever I do a search and put the search terms in quotes on bikeforums, I get exactly what I want. Check and make sure you are fully enclosing the search term in quotes.

Haven't tried it in the forums; but have seen searches set up this way work for what you are trying to do.

single+speed for posts where both terms are present anywhere in the post.
"single+speed" or "single speed" for posts where both terms are present and together or an exact phrase.

Maybe I'm confusing myself (not hard to do). If I do a search for "Allez Comp" I am seeing the terms 'Allez' and 'Comp' highlighted as well as the phrase "Allez Comp". Maybe that's what was making me think I'm getting threads that don't actually have the whole phrase. I went and redid the phrase search and can't find any threads that do not have the phrase present somewhere in the thread. Once again 'user error' :'(

Another good tip is to search titles only. That eliminates a lot of the junk.

I just did a thread search for "Allez Comp" using quotes outside the search term: http://www.bikeforums.net/search.php?searchid=1109847

All results are Allez Comp. Not one word or the other either. That should help you out. :)
