DrivingóDoes it make you crazy?

I had occasion to drive in city traffic last weekendómy first time behind the wheel of a car (actually a pickup) in a year or more.

And it drove me absolutely flippin' insane! It was so stressful/busy/high speed/unpredictable I couldn't believe it.

I concede that I haven't driven for a while, and that I might yet become accustomed to the pace, but this was brutal. Huge lineups at every light, people changing lanes at high speed to avoid left turners and parked cars, people racing to beat orange and even newly-red lights. A honking, screaming, bird-flipping fiasco of biblical proportions.

If it hadn't been a borrowed vehicle, I'd have driven it off a pier, towelled off and run to the nearest pub.

Does anyone else share this experience? Or is it just me and 18 months of being removed from this mess?

I like driving, but I hate traffic (and other drivers in general). Every time I drive to work (which is becoming less and less frequent!) I always end up wishing I was on my bike.

I get that caged animal rage after a few hours behind the wheel.

I've been car-free for a bit over two years, and I don't miss it at all. On the rare occasions when I've driven in that time--someone else's car--I find it hugely irritating and stressful and can't imagine wanting to do it as a regular thing. In fact, I don't really even enjoy being a passenger in a car anymore, either. Biking is best, but I'd also rather walk or take the bus over driving or riding in a car, anytime.

I'm with you. I can't believe I was such a huge car enthusiast when I was younger. I can't stand driving or even being a passenger anymore.

it makes me a bit crazy too. we rented a car over the weekend and went north on the interstate. there were so many heavy trucks flying along at 70+ mph that it was extermely nerve racking. when i used to drive everyday it didn't bother me as much. but since i drive rarely now, i think i notice the potential danger a lot more. i'm perfectly happy with my non-car lifestyle now.

I LOVE driving. Cycling is great, but it never compares to the sheer joy of a well sorted-out car in the twisties.

Traffic is nothing more than an additional challenge.

Same here. My Dad was a local stock car driver. I was so into cars, horse power and speed.

Now I can't stand being a passenger in a vehicle. I'm always tighting up the seat belt and telling the driver to slow down/look out.

Riding in a vehicle gives me the shakes!
