Anybody here in/was in the FFA?

yeah if you dont know what FFA is, it's Future farmers of america. Its the biggest school organazation in the united states by far, but if you grew up in a big city you probably werent in it.

i was just curious becuase next week is the (idaho) state convention. If you havnt been in FFA its kinda hard to explain the competeitions, but last year i was on a team that competeted in a event called Dairy Foods. the competition involved the proper identification of 10 cheeses by taste, the identification of 10 different defects in milk, and a writen test on dairy food knowledge. My team was first in district and the state so we moved on to compete on the national level. We took 12th, Ohio's team was first and californias was 2nd.

but yeah next week i go compete in a total different competition based off plant ID
what stuff did you guys do in the FFA?

I was in it! I remember the milk tasting best. Mastidus (with lumps), soured milk, and off flavor if the cow got into some weeds. I didn't do the identifying of cheeses, that doesn't sound so bad. I also did the plant identification - that has come in handy. I also won the land judging contest for our region.

I miss the oranges we used to sell the most. One year they were as big as grapefruits. Haven't found oranges like that since.

Congrats on the good showing last year and best of luck this year. Have a great time!

The FFA was by far the best thing I did in high school. I did basically as much as I could and I learned a ridiculous amount.

12th in nationals is a pretty darn good placing. How many people walking around with apples at the entrance to that competition? I only competed at state (7th individual), but I thought that was pretty funny to see everyone munching on apples to clear any strong tastes out of their mouths.

Anyhow, what did I do? Raised pigs, baled hay, welded, poultry judging, livestock judging, dairy judging, dairy products, extemp and prepared speaking, creed, rituals, parliamentary procedures, National Safety Congress, a jillion different community service activities and chapter fundraisers, chapter and district office, traveled to about half a dozen different states, made a lot of friends, and put it all on my resume when applying for college. Seriously, start working on your resume now and add to it as you go. Colleges and people with scholarships love to see people with stuff to bragg about.

Somebody saw my "FFA member lives here" sign and was like, "Hey, you're in the FFA." I was impressed they knew about it and asked if they were in it, too. "No way! I remember seeing it in Napoleon Dynamite." I haven't seen that movie, but I can't imagine that it represented the blue jacket very well.

Count me in back in high school. I took two years of horticulture and one year of agriculture science, and my dad teaches agriculture mechanics, but in a neighboring school district. Other then a really horrible summer camp program, I had a great time. For some reason, I did well in Soil Identification. I was also good at Parlimentry Procedure. (why do I hear the word "geek")

If your bike has breaks, don't ride it.

Heh, sounds like fun. I like milk. And dairy products. And chickens. I remember we had 3 chickens for about 2 years. Lots of fun. For some reason they never laid(is that spelled right?) eggs. We had a rooster and two hens.

    Oh, I vote aye!

    couldn't resist...

It is better than being in a gang, unless you are in gangs and compete as gangs in the FFA events.

I did some farmwork in Hebron IL in junior high and high school - toughest 3 months of those years.
Best of Luck to all of you competing this year. Enjoy!

Oh man, I spent a lot of time at the FFA camp in Hardinsburg, Kentucky as a kid. My aunt and uncle ran the dining room there. He was a retired CPO from the Navy and ran that kitchen like the mess hall at boot camp.

I gotta tell you, I don't miss going to the barn to milk in the pre-dawn cold nor do I miss loading hay in the summer heat.

Ahhh, farm equipment, cow dung, and hot chicks. FFA at its finest.

Okay, I was in FFA. Briefly. Showed dogs. (My parents breed/show/field train retrievers, I didn't have much choice) ... was fun while I did it ....
