I'm surprised Mississippi has inspections.

Probably not, but if you keep car in Louisiana state long enough, they can give you a citation for not having a local tag.

Anything's possible. With out of state plates, some law enforcement seem to make stuff up as they go along. They'll ticket you out of ignorance or knowing that you're probably passing through and will pay rather than contest it.

I used to travel around the country delivering pricey European cars to dealerships, often driving the car rather than hauling them when we had only one at a time.

Over time I noticed some state's highway patrols were more likely than others to ticket a driver with out of state or dealer tags.

I was stopped in New Mexico by a young highway patrolman who didn't even know what a dealer tag was.

I was stopped in Florida by a cop who claimed I couldn't drive in Florida with my Texas driver's license. Not kidding.

I was stopped outside Chicago by a highway patrolman who stopped several cars with out of state plates, telling each of us to wait until he got back. Apparently his gimmick was to stop as many as possible per shift, line us up along the side of the highway, then come back later to ticket us. I probably waited 30 minutes for him to return.

And that was in the good ol' days before "asset forfeiture" when the highway patrol was perverted into state sanctioned freebooters and pirates, confiscating property and cash without warrants or probable cause.

About 25 years ago a guy I knew vaguely from high school became our rural county's sheriff. He immediately turned it into a profit making enterprise, targeting out of staters for cash on the spot to avoid jail time while they waited for the judge. The FBI finally caught up with him and he went to federal prison, and died soon afterward. His family, county government and the rural news media covered up a lot of this, so only federal court records and external media reported it. Meanwhile his chief deputy and cohort in blackmail murdered a motorist who refused the shakedown. He's in federal prison too.

And that's only a random sampling of stuff I've encountered. It seemed rampant in the south years ago, but asset forfeiture, immigration paranoia and other factors have spread the abuses pretty evenly around the nation.

In Iowa (many years ago), the inspection sticker was only needed to renew your tag or sell your car. Not having a sticker was not an offense.

Usually the windshield wipers failed and usually they'd sell them to you right there.

I've got a WV inspection sticker that expired in 2004 on my windshield. Plates are good to go for local use though. Would be sad if a rock got kicked up and we had to replace the windshield and lose that sticker.

I don't think you can get an inspection violation in LA for a MS sticker (if you have MS plates, obviously if you have LA plates the MS sticker is irrelevant) but all states require all rigs to be streetlegal (for street use) so with or without the sticker if your car has some deficiency that a cop can find he can give you a ticket for it. Usually it's a warning w/ x hours to get it fixed but not always.
