My 13 month old was badly burned in a campfire.

He is doing fine now. I just wanted to give some recognition to the Shriners. They are an incredible organization. They made us(wife and son) comfortable beyond belief. We live in Knoxville TN and they flew a Lear jet out to get my son. When the nursing team arrived the first thing they said to me was, "Everything is going to be all right. Don't worry about anything, this is all free." Not that money mattered to me but how wonderful is that? Well if you want any info or are looking for something to support, you found it.

Shriners are great, and keep a low profile until you need them, then wow, what an organization. They look a little silly in the fez and tiny cars they drive in parades, but when they are asking for money, I'm reaching for my check book. Best wishes to you all, hope your child revovers quickly and completely.

I'm glad that your son is doing better now, I know it will take a while for him to try to adjust to the thought of what happened to him. I hope you and your wife are okay, too. We are so fortunate to be able to have access to such wonderful organizations such as Shriner's, aren't we?

Thanks to everyone.

Well we have a fire pit in our backyard. Saturday we had a small get-to-gether and had a fire. Late Sunday evening our 3 kids were outside playing. I never thought about the fire still being hot. The kids have a swing set/play house in the back. Me and my wife were sitting in some lawn chairs when we heard a loud scream. It was my youngest son(brennan) standing in the fire pit. I can't explain the terrible feeling I had at that moment. I grabbed him and ran to the sink and washed his feet with cool water. At that point we could tell he needed medical attention. We are so happy that it was only his left foot that needed the skin grafts. He had third degree burns on the left and only second on the right foot. Me and Julie(wife) have felt so much guilt about the accident that it is hard to talk about. I keep thinking how could I have been so stupid not to know that there were still coals in the pit. I also am mad at myself that we didn't have shoes on our kids. They always play in the back without shoes. My wife is still in Cincinnati and she said the grafts look great. If everything keeps going good and there is no infection he will be able to walk and come home on Friday. I had to come back home to take care of some business and I am going back on Tuesday. Like I said we are lucky that he did not fall face first into the pit. We met a lot of wonderful parents who had children that were not so fortunate.

I knew the Shriners focused on burns, but I really had no idea they would do so much to help a fellow person. Sorry to hear about this very unfortunate accident. You, your wife and Brennon will also be in our prayers for a speedy recovery.

Don't blame yourself. Sure some things can be prevented. But you just can't guard your kids from everything. I ought to know. I carry a very noticeable scar from something I did when I was a wee tike. Heck, my mother was actually watching me when I did it and she just couldn't believe I did something like that. It was my hand I stuck into a pulley with a rope moving through it. It did however, only affect my right little finger and three knuckles. I just can't use the finger as well as the other ones.
Here's hoping your little one comes out of this fine and an appreciation of fire.

Great to hear about your son doing better. How did the Shriners get involved? Was it a call made by the hospital or did someone suggest them to you?

Again thanks to everyone for the kind words. Yeah stuff happens especially when you have 3 kids. People have told us we are doing good seeing that this is our first time to an emergency room.

My wife took him to the closest(I had to watch Ryan and Lauren until my parents got here)hospital which is St. Mary's. They said that he needed to go to Children's Hospital. So they moved him.The doctor working the ER at Children's looked at the wounds and said he needed special care. He told us we were going to have to go to one of three burn hospitals in our area. He first called the Shriners and they said they would come get him. They got a team together and flew to Knoxville in under 4 hours. The Cincinnati Hospital can only hold 30 patients so we were blessed to get in. The other Shriner burn centers are in Boston and Galveston. They had to send a bunch of kids from Galveston because of the hurricane. When I left it was at full capacity. The therapy and future visits are all free too. They are an organization that is using the donations wisely and deserve more support.

It's called an "accident" for a reason. Don't beat yourself up over it since hindsight is 20/20. The "coulda/woulda/shoulda" is what leaves people depressed. Look forward to your son's recovery.

Be sure to inform others whom have fire pits about this incident. The opportunity to save your son from the burn has passed but informing others of your mistake in judgement might very well save their children from having a similar incident. Sure, you'll never hear if someone wasn't burned because of you giving out the information, but you'll probably feel a lot worse if you don't tell someone and it happens to their child.

Hopefully all will be well with your son. I'm sorry to hear that this happened. During your time in Cinci., if you need any local knowledge feel free to PM me and I'll do my best to point you in the right direction, although I'm sure you'll be spending most of your time at the hospital.

Sorry to hear about the accident. There's very little point in beating yourself up over it, as they're called accidents for a reason. My wife and I have a two year old daughter, Shannon, who can get into trouble faster than either of us can react to. Maybe someday in years to come, you'll look back on it and be able to have a laugh about it.
