my throat hurts
Don't think there is a different. Gargle with warm, salty water.
Menthols are weird. I smoked them for a bit in uni, but ultimately to me it's the smoking equivalent of alco-pops.
I can't see how they could be any better or worse for your throat and lungs. If anything, I would think that the menthol lulls you into a false sense of security.
The myth is that they are even worse for your dick, too (though I have no idea how true that is).
I've heard that the menthol is actually inside the filter. Never heard of a difference in effect. If your throat hurts, stop for a while or quit altogether.
I roll my own cigarettes (Samson, Drum, Zig-Zag), so there is no filter at all. I try to smoke less to compensate for how bad this is. I don't kid myself about it, though;clearly I am shortening my lifespan.
Ummmm... the lesser of two evils? Both are filthy habits and both will get you sick.

But of all my faults, it's the easiest for my friends to forgive.
My best friend kicked smoking when he was in an immobilizing neck brace/apparatus for a year. It just became too inconvenient to navigate his way out of the house and into the yard to have a smoke, so he didn't. Ironic as hell that his life-threatening injury may be the instrument which will prolong his life.
All of my brothers except for one, all of whom as kids said we would never ever smoke, now smoke. Was talking to my younger bro in Dallas/FW and he said he was going to quit. He said he has 2 packs and those were the last. Hopefully he will stick to it.

When they say all things work out, they usually do - it just some times takes longer for us to look back and realize how they did so.
