The difference between a geek and a nerd

Whats the difference?
My friend today said a geek is one who "knows what they are doing"
while a nerd is one who has it dominate their social life, "the video gamer" is what she said.
What do you think is the difference>

Fashion sense.

Nerds are obviously nerds, while geeks seem normal until they open their trap.

+2

Nerds are more socially inept than geeks. But I think they're smarter too.

Nerds debate the technical specifications of the warp engines.
Geeks debate plot inconsistencies.

A geek posts on the Foo forum. A nerd responds to the post.

Nope....Nerds "may" have one subject they are smart at, but they are really about doing dorky things (playing D&D instead of going to the party, etc...). Geeks are still truly smarter.

BTW....I routinely consider myself a geek!

I am a geek. I definately agree with that definition. I am far more socially capable than my nerd friends. But in the same breath they are likely more logical and book smart.

I also lucked out to be a big kid. I joined the football team which kind of forces you into the social scene.

I'm not a nerd, because I dress normal. I don't get anal about inconsistencies, like my nerd friends do.

I also don't talk like a geek, although I think like one. I like sports and can throw a nice spiral pass, too.

Nerds tell jokes that are really fun -- to them.

Geeks tell jokes that aren't even funny.

I guess I consider myself a nerd thus my user description. However, If I took a girl on a date I wouldn't sit there talking about some stupid tech stuff while her eyes were shining.

May the banter continue:

Pretty much I fall under my definition of geek...I look pretty un-nerdy until I open my trap...then all hell breaks loose.

Latest discussion: liquid metal based cooling systems.

Previous discussions:

CPU clock speed Vs architecture

Is Xmax as important as fs when choosing a woofer?

subwoofers: power handling or sensitivity...which is more important?

if they are both covering an antenna, which six-pack of beer will do the most negative impact on wifi signals....cans or bottles? (drunken geek talk at it's finest)

Like I said....normal until the trap opens

a nerd is holistically a little on the fringe, possibly drifting into inept, but certainly not in the mainstream. Possibly a subculture. Cool nerds graduate into hipsters.

Geeks, on the other hand, tend to be pretty mainstream. That is, of course, until a subject matter of particular interest comes along, and then all hell breaks loose. Bike geeks graduate into OCP.

Nerds don't say too much. Geeks give their three dollars.

What are BF members who spend their Saturday nights in the Bike Forum, nerds or geeks, SuperDex?
