A 10 dollar fee for local pickup?

I need a monitor, a cheap P.O.C.
Its only going to be running one not very demanding software with probably 5 basic colors so i dont care if its an 8" screen or a 25" screen. Well 8" might be a bit small but you know hat I mean.
So i look on ebay for items within 25 miles, and came across a place that is selling refurbished Dell monitors for cheap, the next town over.
They charge a flat rate shipping of 25 dollars, seems a bit high but Cathode Ray Tube monitors are not all that light still. Anyways its not worth paying 25 dollars for a 5 minute car ride. So i email them asking for local pickup instead and explaining why.
Theres a 10 dollar fee for local pickup I am told! Holy crap! What possible reason is there for this madness?

Because they can. I don't see a problem with it. I wouldn't pay it but still....they can do whatever they want. They probably build some profit into the shipping and won't realize that with local pickup. Hence the charge.

Make sure there are no specials going on that would comapre to the deal you would be getting.

With the prices of TFTs now, many CRTs are going for rather good prices.

Well, pick up the monitor. If it's one town over, you should be good to go with picking up this monitor.

Actually i decided not to spring for it, once the price went over 30 i said screw it.
I payed 40 and got a pentium 3, along with a brand new mouse and keyboard. So i wont pay over 25 for the monitor. Normally im not this cheap (well im cheap anyways but not this bad). But this monitor is going in a workshop, i dont want to be upset if i break it, and its only going to run one program which is DOS based anyways

Yea. I got a nice apple studio display and some harmon/kardon speakers, both for $50.

Actually i did get a liquidation sale on ebay.
So i got a 400mhz celeron. Its a compaq deskpro, with ethernet installed, as well as its own little video card, and a mighty 3.2 GB HD . It had windows 98 SE preinstalled, as well as Microsoft Office, probably 2000. They sent along a brand new keyboard and mouse, like still in the wrapping new.
For 38.99!! I love ebay

Ah so you got an official AOL desktop coaster kit....just add foam/cork to the bottom and you have a perfectly fine device for keeping your desktop looking good!

Good deal!

phantom, I have a monitor you can have for free

I think it's a 15" or 17"

you would have to cover the shipping, but you can have the monitor no charge

PM me if interested
