There are a few jobs openings overseas, in the Middle East. Hazard pay!

My bro was offered 70k+ just to do logistics...sit at a comp all day and keep track of shipping in a warehouse. And that's in Kuwait, mind you...

What are they doing? Why do they come here? Some kind of instinct. Memory, of what they used to do. This was an important place in their lives.

One of the first exercises you can do is create an X-Y matrix with your interests on one axis and your skills on the other. Where they intersect is where you should be thinking about a career.

There's a good paperback book for about $15.00, What Color Is Your Parachute? 2005: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career Changers by Bolles and Bolles that has some very good, practical advice, including some self-discovery exercises. The key to making money is doing something you truly enjoy; if you're happy with what you're doing, the money will happen. Unfortunately, the majority of people prostitute themselves doing things they don't enjoy just to pay the rent and keep food on the table.

buy cigarettes in new jersey and sell them in new york. with the taxes here, you could really clean up. just don't let your mother know you quit your job to hawk cigarettes on the street full time. she might be a tad disappointed.

okay, I'll play Dalai Lama here and ask Why? Why do you want more money? What fulfillment will it provide that you do not have now?

(or maybe you've got gambling debts we should know about? )

A lot of people say money's not everything. But when you don't even make enough to cover your necessities, money's everything.

I ran into the same issue about 6 years ago. I was working long hours in retail for very little money. I had a baby on the way and needed some life improvement fast. At that time the two best areas seemed to be Information Technology or Medical. I figured computers aren’t going anywhere and there will always be sick and/or old people (i.e. aging baby boomers). Long story…now I work in a hospital in the I.T. dept. I basically took some classes and got some certifications. I started out contracting and worked myself into this job. The I.T. world has definitely taken some hits so it’s not as easy to get into now. However, I also thought about doing something like radiology tech. I think they’re in demand and many places may even pay for some or your training. Just a thought.

Judging from your avatar you maybe ready for a medical career already.

(open up a shop that caters to octogenerians w/free Viagra samples and you'd clean up)

I'm a mechanical engineer now but my work sucks.
The place is nice, private bathroom (for now), park bike indoors, warm place to hang clothes to dry, semi-flexible hours around 9-5, access to bikeforums.
But there's no room for growth, work is pretty trivial, none of my projects go anywhere, everything gets stalled by beauracracy, the pay sucks, the people here aren't exactly the brightest pennies in the jar (there are some nice ones), and since it's an older company, all the engineers are old farts, no one my age to talk to.
Seems like I like the journey more than the end result, I like telling people what to do but not necessairly doing it myself... management sounds nice.

hit up careerbuilder or monster and get out. Find a small company in a bike-friendly city. Sounds like it's just stale. Mix things up, my good man. I'd speculate it's not a career change, but an employer change you need....
