The Sultan of (Price) Swing

Watch this powerpoint slide show that purports to reveal the true cost of gasoline. It's sure to spark some outrage. (If you don't have PowerPoint, you can download a viewer at microsoft.com.)

How about we just note that Exxon reported like its 2nd largest quarterly profit.
January quarter they reported 8.x billion and july/august they reported 7.64 Billion

Yes, I'm outraged by the people voted for the current president knowing he has a lot of friends in oil industry AND complain that the gas price is ridiculously high.

I suggest those people either not vote for any republican president candidates or buy oil company stocks when they get elected.

I am outraged by some people's inability to formulate proper sentences.

It's generally considered old news that the people in control in the Middle East make surround themselves in extravagance while a large portion of their citizens live in poverty. It's also old news that OPEC minimizes the competitiveness of the crude industry. The refineries, although still in pretty good position as TexasGuy noted, really do less to affect the prices. In fact, don't quote me on the numbers because I don't have them immediately at hand, but the price of crude has approximately tripled in the last decade or so (~$20 up to ~$60 per barrel), while the price at the pump has slightly more than doubled ($1.25 to $2.75). I dare say that the refineries carry much less of the responsibility for the prices than the crude pumpers. The cost of pumping the oil out of the ground hasn't increased that much, but the demand has, and the market has shown it will support the price.

We could attempt to reduce the influence of foreign price fluctuations by drilling more in Alaska, but most people seem opposed to that. We could also break up the oil cartel by declaring war on the entire Middle East, but even more people seem to be opposed to that, so it looks like we better get used to high gas prices and maybe even get over our irrational fear of nuclear power plants.

No outrage here, even if it were real.

Just kind of a tired sadness that our civilization is probably starting to collapse under the weight of our greed and wastefulness. Yeah, conspicuous consumption by oil barons is part of that, but the ordinary, everyday stupidity and insanity of the 'murkan way of life is the real culprit.

Nobody put a gun to anybody's head and forced them to give money to oil companies.

BTW, I love my country and I'm an active player in the system. And I bike.

(Love the sinner, hate the sin, right?)

LOL, good job on the urban legend research. Somebody at work sent this ppt to me and I didn't even think to check Snopes. The car looked kind of fake right away.
